what would be the right heater for my shanty
« on: Dec 30, 2007, 02:06 PM »
i just built a 4x8 foot shanty and 6 feet high looking for a heater to heat it. I saw a heater at wal mart for 40 dollars it is about 6 or 8 inches round and runs a 20 lb propane tank with 3 setting.Does anyone no if this would be enough heat to keep us warm.
Hang out with the kids or go fishing......Can I take the kids out fishing?

It really depends on how well insulated your shack is. In most cases you'll be surprised at how little of a heat source you'll need. I'd say go ahead and start with that little one if that is what you can afford. The Mr. Heater Buddy & Big Buddy are some of the most popular. They come with oxygen sensors that will shut them down when carbon monoxide gets to heavy. No matter what you use make sure you have some ventilation going for your safety. And if you go with wood heat I'd keep it at the opposite end as the door.

sounds like a 10-12 thousand btu sunflower heater. should be sufficent, you may want a fan to help circulate the heat. they are hard on propane though.

Around here the folks who can afford them get the vented style propane heaters. It is nice to wake up from a nap alive. ;D Sunflower heaters work nice, but they produce carbon monoxide. If your shack is sealed up tight you need to address the ventilation issue. In my oppinion, a buddy heater may be on the small side for your shack. A big buddy may be better suited to your needs. I personally like the buddy heaters because of the low oxy shutoff and they shut off if you tip them too.

People think that carbon monoxide smells like like truck exhaust and it burns your eyes, this is not true! CO is a silent killer with no smell or taste.
