Shrimp for bullheads?
« on: Jan 13, 2024, 06:14 PM »
I know this has nothing to do with ice fishing but since there isn't much ice and I figured not to many are probably paying much attention to My Fish Finder I thought I'd ask here. Price Chopper has 51-60 count raw shrimp this coming week for $3.99 a lb. so I figured I'd pick up a couple of bags. I've read they out fish worms. Anybody have any thoughts on them? I know I'm jumping the gun a little bit, but it won't be long before there biting. Hopefully by this time next Saturday I'll be out on the ice, but until them I'm just trying to keep busy.

It doesn't make sense to me to use bait that is better eating than any fish that it could catch  ::)

We use shrimp for bullheads. Take them out of the freezer and thaw for half a day so they get a good stink and they’ll usually outfish worms or leeches for us

Absolutely Billie don't even hesitate. I'm one who loves to bullhead fish, and I will and have tried most anything. For me raw shrimp will out fish anything. they are so much easier to keep than crawlers, just stick them in the freezer.
Crawlers sell for $3.50  to  $3.80 / dozen here that is .29 each.
Take your 50 count bag of shrimp and cut it into 3 pieces   that's less than .05 each.
At the end of the night if you've got bait left just refreeze it. What can be better than that?

I've all but given up on crawlers. I'll carry a few just for old times' sake but will catch more on the shrimp.

On a side note, I have 6 crawler containers full of freshwater clams from October in the freezer I'll try this spring. I figure they fish will clams on the coast, so why not - they're plentiful and easy picking while gill fishing with the fly rod.

Big market in selling bullheads for dinners
Dinners with fries and coleslaw go between 17-$18

Burlap bag with a road kill in it can draw them and make them more aggressive at times

This goes back 40+ yrs.
Used to hit City Market on the way to Electra Lake, SW Co. grab a # or less of popcorn shrimp. Trout would fight each other for them.🤗

I buy three or four shrimp, (whatever they have fresh on ice in the fish case), cut them into “bait size” pieces, and put them in a small container with a tight fitting lid, and put them in the fridge for the early morning fishing trip. I usually don’t freeze them unless I have leftover shrimp as I find freezing changes the texture somewhat, and prefer the fresh ones from the fridge. In any event, raw shrimp make a good addition to any jig when mealies and waxies aren’t cutting it.

Clams are used for all sorts of fishing there have some durable pieces I have used the tiny canned shrimp before figured perch and gills mostly eat scuds not much difference as hard as it's getting to get bait I am looking for alternatives

I agree with the bait availability    Depends on where you are you could have a drive to get bait.    I was up near Vernon so I made the trip over to Lakeshore Outfitters and bought 750 spikes  good enough for what's left of the winter   He just got them in fresh and his prices are as reasonable as anyone.

If you can get clam necks - they are tougher and stay on well ...use them in the ocean in Maine all the time.....now adays you can get anything on-line too ....

When carp fishing typical slip simker rig 1/8 ounce egg sinker just a number 4 or larger treble hook I break off about an inch of the larger biscuit and hold it underwater for about 20 seconds and squeeze the water out fold over hook and keep squeezing it until it stick's together good for one cast usually a couple other things keep leader no more than a foot strike at the slightest movement of the line keep balls small maybe index fingernail size to thumbnail max
