Hi Colloerscc,
Fishing Lake (FL) is an unusual lake, in the open water season it's quite good, even off shore, but in the winter the fish are more moody, picky and sullen, but that don't mean they won't bite, it's just that the numbers caught will be alot lower than in the open water seaon and you really have to work to get one to bite. :-\
If you can get your C1 limit of either pike or walleye you have had a good day, if you get a limit of both species you had a great day.  Most days pike are the only fish biting, the walleye will hit from time to time but not very frequent, and the perch, your very fortanate if you ice one and for most of them they are very small. :P

I feel the majoirty of the walleye are in the deep water just like in most lakes, probaby 25 -30 feet or more, but not many folks ever vernture that far out to try for them. Most people just park on shore and fish just a ways off and pick up mostly pike, you will see the shacks.
I have heard of the odd walleye caught this year in shallower near shore waters off Leslie Beach and on the N side of the lake at Buckhorn Bay and Saskin Beach.

I can tell you though, from being out last weekend, that the lake has a good amount of snow on it right now and I didn't see anyone drive a truck on the lake either. Most people just walk out or use a snowmachine.
I just walked out myself and was constanly sinking in snow that was over my ankles and partway up my leg in deeper drifts.
At least I was not skunked for the effort and iced 2 pike both days I tried. :)

For an up to date report of the fishing in that area, I would contact the folks at Reel Marine in Foam Lake.
They usually have a good idea where they are biting and on what.
Here is thier website with contact info ----> http://www.reelmarine.com/

Good luck if you give FL a try.

Water Wolf have you seen or heard of any perch come out of there in the past few years? I am curious to know because I have not heard of perch in that lake for many years? A regular out there was catching walleye in 6' of water 2 weeks ago but he does get out there early and leave before noon and fishs there every day.

Hi charski,
I have heard of a few nice perch being caught this summer and in the past during the open water season, some were up to 1lb.
I was told by the anglers that caught them they were caught trolling a spinner rig with worm or minnow and bottom bouncer while fishing for walleye. Most of the big ones came from the Little Fishing Lake and in the narrows area.

I've only caught one 5" - 6" a few summers ago on the same spinner rig setup and minnow, it was too small to keep and went back.
I have also seen perch in stomachs of some of the few pike I kept. Most are only 2" -3" inches long, more bait then anything. :P

Good to know that the walleye do slide into the shallows some time, they must have an early morning bite.

I would love to see the perch make a comeback in Fishing Lake but with the numbers of walleye (that really only really show up in the summer) the perch may only show up in there stomachs as well.

There are alot of monster pike in FL that clean up most of the perch.

Did any of you give the lake a try this weekend?
If so, how did you do?

I was there Friday and Sat.
I iced 3 pike the first day and 1 the 2nd day.

Cool, good to hear you found them.  @)
Yeah it seems most of the pike caught this year at FL have been from the shallows and there is no need to go out too far to find them.

The pike I found were in the 2 - 3 lb range.
How about you, any big ones?

Hi all,
I though I would share a photo of " The Big One" I found on March 12th /2018 at Fishing Lake.

I wanted to test one of my home made loop rigs to see how if it might work - it did, and I found this! ;D

This Northern Pike is 26lbs, and, 45" long.
After a quick measurement and photo it went back to grow even larger. :woot:

I was going to enter it in this years online tourney, but, with the time change, missed the final photo deadline by 20 min.
Oh well, at least I got a chance to ice my largest fish to date. @)

I will go into detail of the catch in my ice fishing report for that day.
