I got my first beaver dam for christmas this year.  I found it a little harder to get the line back on the reel than my HTs.  The HTs have a little handle on the reel where as the beaver dams don't.  Also the beaver dam you can't take the line out of the line guide.  I really like the quality of the beaver dam but they are a little hard to deal with with gloves on when its extreme temps.

I'm partial to the Thompson trap model.  My two boys can put on quite a clinic though with their US Line version traps.
I guess it doesn't matter much when you're running from flag to flag !

Beaver Dams !

Perchchaser , You have to watch those little handle deals on HTs in shallow water. I fish shallow water 3 - 5 feet for Walleyes and have seen the line get caught on those handles when a fish is peelling line = lost fish. >:( Have seen that happen a few times. I don't use HTs too much but the ones I have I have cut those handles off.

They do make a little plastic handle deal that will fit the top of any Tee bar style tip up for rewinding your line. I just use my thumb/forefinger to twist the tee bar. Easier and faster than either of those handle deals.

I generally am a jigger for crappies or eyes, but I do have an HT I got maybe 8 years ago, maybe used it 10 times, none in the last few years. Does anyone have a link to a pic of a Beaver Dam tip-up so I can see what everyone's talking about?

FOR NORTHERN AND BASS. I LOVE THE HEAVY DUTY HARDWOOD FRAMES. THE QUALITY OF THE TIPUP CANNOT BE BEAT. GANDERMOUNTAIN HAS THEM ON SALE FOR 15 BUCKS.

When I checked them out I noticed some wobble when I spun the shaft.  On bass and pike it won't matter.  When I tipup fish (which is rare) I walleye fish.  Just wondering if the wobble I noticed on the Frabill shaft will spook walleyes.

I like my homemade ones the best, something about doing it yourself makes it much more satisfying even if they are just the same as store bought. :)

I don't forsee any problem with the wobble. maybe the shaft was bent on the one you looked at. mine spin straight and true.

Beaver Dams, good action, tough and easy to use. Something about catching a fish on a wooden tip up appeals to me more than on plastic. Just bought a new set of three for my gand daughter to get her going and with luck she will someday get my old red and green ones as I think they can last forever with a little care, :D
Good thing about prisons- they reduce the potential number of fisherman on the ice!

I like the HT windlass and the HT Polar Therms. The windlass seems to garner more strikes than any others because it keeps your bait moving. For lake trout I put on the same tube jigs I jig with on my rods on the windlass. Then put on the same piece of anchovy or sucker meat. It seems to get more hits than just plain bait.

I have to jump in with my HT Enterprises Polar and Windlass TipUps. Each is dependable and adjustable. Now I just need to use them more often.
