LOGGY!   I made a depth map of this lake last year or phase 1. All the mapping was done in summer-fall. Lots of nice fish below 12' and above 26'.  I;ll be at a few fishing shows with all my lake maps but not that far North.

..my advice is "be safe", there are a lot of springs at Hunters.

..deepest is off the boat launch.

..I've caught trout, smallmouth, pickerel, and bluegills out of there.

Thanks for heads-up...yeah have years xperience of fishin tricky ice just above Conowingo Hydro Plant which make reading those lil lake springs a piece of cake..

Usually fish tip-ups or jigging?

There are some really nice smallies in there and they keep it well stocked with trout.  I would try both tip-ups and jigging and rig a few for both species.

I think this lake has nice fish of all the listed species you just got to find them.  You should read through the archived theads for hunters lake for the past couple of years.  you should learn a lot from that.  remember this lake is known not  produce numbers but size.

the best end for trout for me is at the end with the spillway from the dam.  crappies, perch, and most of my decent gills come from the 14-22 foot depths. bass are all over and where ever you find the trout to be you will find all the pickerel and sometimes some pretty big ones.

dont forget about the elusive walleye either.  never seen one where you would typically think to find them.  thats all im going to say on here about them.

I've made plans to go a couple times and they got wiped out, once a snowstorm, the other times I don't remember.  It would great to go with someone that knows the springs well.

Be nice to know for sure before making my 140 mile drive up... of course this trip I'm going irregardless of ice conditions since flintlock season is in through Monday. See temps are 27 in Hillsgrove this morn but to hit 44 later today... :o

hey Loggy, I fished Hunters and Rose Valley almost exclusively growing up with my dad, And found that they freeze almost at the same rate. Rose Valley isn't quite ready yet, So without checking I would say Hunters is the same. Hunters has a lot of springs feeding it as well so watch where you get on and off and where you step. If you are headed up there anyways take your gear and check it out. Better to have it and not use it, then to not have it and be able to use it.

No problem man, I haven't fished Hunters in a while as I seem to have a curse there. Been there 100 times or more and been skunked like 85% of the time...lol My dad used to take me there all the time talking about how he caught 100 trout one day with my Pop. And I think he must have been dreaming  this because we never catch jack!!  On occasion i got into some gills or dink perch but never any numbers or size. So now I pretty much refuse to drive up there when my Dad suggests.

I only have fished Hunters for trout & caught a few mostly down at dam over the years but have done much better in the Loyalsock.  Never have ice fished there but due to no ice in my area around home plan to fish Hunters & RV.  Just wish it wasn't a 3 1/2 hour drive. Pulling our shortly for my Sullivan County camp & will post conditions up there when back next week w/pics etc. Spoke to Dave at Hillsgrove Store this morn & he hasnt heard of anyone fishing Hunters & doubts very much if enuff ice there due to warm weather conditions. Thnx again for input...

NO SAFE ICE in any areas cked.  Likely snow covered now after Friday nite's 3". Gonna be just a lil while yet. Flintlock hunted Friday & today till Noon.  Didn't smoke a deer but great trip nevertheless.

Your much welcome dkfry.  Once I get out fishing will also share fishing reports with folks here. I have no problem whatsoever sharing specific lake ice conditions plus specific lake fishing reports...in fact it's pleasure sharing helpful info with fellow sportsman.  IMO...it's what this is all bout!!    Of course...you will have to get out on the lake & look for those elusive & constantly changing hot spots!! ;D

We just used minnows and wax worms.  The Pickerel was caught on a tip up on a minnow....probably in about 5 feet or less.  I am new to all of this, so it was a blast just being out, and learning from my guide....Nick.

A buddy was at Hunters today for about 4 hrs. Got skunked! Said there was still about 4" at the dam. He didn't venture out too far to check thickness elsewhere.
Been checked by Fish Comm. a few times at Hunters but it's been a few years. Back in the late 70's & early 80's used to get checked all the time at Hunters, Rose Valley and Little Pine Dam.

I used to have a cabin right outside hillsgrove. Fished hunters often back then. Never really did that great but I did hit the trout a couple times. In fact, I once had a trout that was unhooked jump out of one of my holes onto the ice. Something must have been hot on its tail. I know there are some nice walleyes in there, I saw them on an underwater camera. DC

TD,

Fished RV Friday & Sat morn then headed to Hunters bout 2 PM Saturday and no one there.  Fished HL dam till dark Saturday & caught 3 trout(all released) about 50-75  yards above concrete inflow box at dam breast in 12' depth. Using waxies & Gulp 1" Emerald Shiners on a small jig head..

No ice this year in southern Pa around home so headed north to hunting camp to find some fishable ice. A good solid 4"-5" ice on both lakes fished. On RV..best ice at PA F&BC North Access vs the East & South areas.  Hunters Lake ...was at dam & ice a rock solid 5".   Hoping to do one or more ice fishing trips pending ice conditions.

Pic attached  of Rose Valley Lake.  Caught some nice yellow perch.  Few fisherman on the ice  making for a very traquil getaway time in the scenic outdoors. Some guys catchin pics & a few SMB there with live minnows but i wasnt lookin for pics or bass..

Note of CAUTION: Ice on both RV & Hunters extremely slick due to recent rain freez-up so wear your spikes!!!

Agree JM...doesnt look too good.

Oh well...my Lund will be readied within a few days  for some early flounder drifting & upper chesapeake early stripers just around the corner. I also hear they are hammering  huge yellow perch currently in upper reaches/tributaries of the Chesapeake right now.  I wont miss a beat just because of weather!! lol  Be future hard water season's ahead!!

Make sure you watch the regs for early stripers on the flats. The MD DCNR is a real bunch of shady characters. They don't want to publish regs and they try to bust anyone they can. They are the reason I havn't bothered going down for stripers or shad the past couple years. My grandfathers having some health issues so I think I will try to get him down for shad this year, he really loves fishing for shad. I just have nothing for the state of MD.

Anyway I think I'm going to burn some gas and try to get on ice this weekend.

with the way the weather has been all season, hunters isnt a place to go walking around.  too many springs. especially with all this precipitiaion  and warm temps we keep getting.
Title: Re: Hunter's Lake-Sullivan County??

Most uniform ice i found on Hunters this past weekend was down around the dam breast area.  Wide areas there with very solid ice with no springs. Likely took a major hit last coupla days fer sure.

I can think of two or three springs right in that end of the lake. If you don't fish it on a regular basis, I wouldn't advise fishing there now.

On the parking lot side?? If they were there...I sure didnt see any inasmuch as I pretty much covered the whole area from dam's concrete inflow(out 100 yards) to shoreline. Possibly on far side?  i didnt get over past the dam's concrete inflow box. Would like to  know for future trips...

irregardless...likely no areas with fishable ice now & even if any...I strongly suggest extreme caution if you venture out.

One the parking lot side, about 75 yards up on the left, and two on the far side, one about 30 yards and one about 75-80 yards. There is also a weak spot at early and late ice, where the old dam laid.

Thanks for info. Yeah saw the lil spring on parking lot side bout 75 yds to left...was obvious seeing the small open area water closely along shoreline impacting only a small area of ice. Didn't get over to far side since I was getting into some trout nearside. All other areas safely locked-up per my time fishing there last weekend.

5" of good ice. 12-15 guys on it each of the past two days. Buddy told me his group caught about 15 perch, only 3 keepers, 2 pickerel, 3 bass and about a dozen small gills today. No trout, but they only fished in deeper water. He said he saw some trout caught in close to the shore and down by the dam. Ice is like a skating rink so take along some creepers so you don't end up on your back side!

Probably better ti stick to Hunters. RV isn't the best. My dad and I were the only ones there on friday and Sunday. Ice at South end where we fished is 3 to 3 1/2"  And spiders and cracks when I walk across it. Probably not the smartest thing I have done fishing ice like this, but i was with my Dad and he's done a lot dumber things so I think I was par for the course. The water is pretty cold and i really don't want to swim in it this time of year. Looks like headed north the rest of the season til that ice is gone...Stupid weather......

My buddy said there was 5" on Saturday when he was at Hunters. The weather has been ok low 40's by day and mid 20's at night. Thinking it should at least be holding that 5". Also heard RV had open edges around the lake last weekend, you may want to stay away until or if we get a good cold snap!

Fished Hunters on Friday(2/10).  Bout 3-4" good ice straight out from ramp area.  Also there were 3 fishing down at dam. Not sure how the ice was in dam area. I caught several nice yellow perch & one pick just where depth dropped to approx 22'. Bite was  lil slow. No one else on lake other than myself  & the guys at dam  friday afternoon..

Just got home from Hunters. Ice was 8" where I was at on the dam end. Flags were fast with runners and then drop for about 45 minutes. Had doubles and one triple. Only one hammer handle on top of the ice though.

Was wondering about Hunters lake...have fished there in the summer and saw some big perch..but have never ice fished there...want a smaller lake feel than RV, as I grew up fishing smaller lakes and ponds and dont really have the greatest gear for a bigger lake...how bad are the springs? would like to go saturday, but I dont really want to go for a swim.
Thanks in advance and sorry if resurrecting an old report is bad news-I am new here.--thanks

Dsr02364, don't let the warnings of springs deter you. Stay away from the edges where small runs and seeps enter, there are plenty of them, many of them are visible, some are not. Hunters can be very hot, or very cold, but there are some nice fish to be had. I'm thinking the state record pickerel will be pulled from here in the near future. As for springs, I have never had trouble away from shore, but I spud, spud, spud. Go get em!
