Let's vote!
« on: Dec 01, 2004, 07:53 PM »
What's your vote for best tipup in windy conditions - snow negligible:

(1) JackTrap - crossjack (is the larger spool worth it?)
(2) Heritage Laker - with graphite reel
(3) Nor'Easter - (do the spool handles cause line tangles?)
(4) Beaver Dam - (issues with rewinding line?)

Still a Thompson fan to the core.
Mine are probably pushing 20 years old, bought well used from a buddy & they've got a lot more in them.
You've got to love that crimson felt waving in the wind...

I prefer the Laker, but the Jack Trap won't wind trip. Its just hard to reset in the cold/wind.  Lakers won't wind trip either and are easy to reset.  The other major reason is that Jack Traps cost 13 dollars more (each) than Lakers.

HT windlass. They require a little more maitenence to keep the hole open but they seem to get more flags than stationary tip ups usually.

:flex:  Jack Traps for me.  Now they've improved on the original by using a stainless tube for the trigger mechanism.  It looks to me he is trying to build the absolute best trap he can, forget the cost.  The standard Jack Trap is now $34.95 and the larger one $49.95.  I guess when we consider the price we pay for a top of the line flyrod this pales in comparison.  I gotta say, Jack Traps are the just one of the best traps available and made in my home state of Maine.  If I were going for just value and a good working trap, Heritage traps are #1.  I bought my middle son a set for Christmas last year.

Definitely Beaver Dams, solid as a rock and snowmobile proof! My lucky board nicknamed snowmobile took a direct hit from a Polaris over 100mph. All I had to do was man handle the very top of the shaft back, now she is even smoother it seems.

I don't think I've ever had a wind flag after 4 years of using my JACK TRAPS!!!  They're the best in my humble opinion.

Heritage gets my vote, picking up at the end of a cold day is easiest with them because the graphite spool has a hole to store the hook and I can be done in no time.
Beaver Dams are very nice and store easily but they are a pain when fishing deep water, Need a slit cut in the top of the brass eye to slip the line thru and I don't care what you say, they are hard to see on the ice.
If you can't see a Heritage then you need to get your glasses fixed.
If I agreed with you we would both be wrong!

;D     JackTraps for me . little more money , but superior product IMHO. Liked the older HT Lakers before they went to plastic spools. Just don't seem like they would last.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong! The spools on the heritage Lakers are Graphite, NOT plastic. Actually, I think they are much stronger then the old aluminum ones and they do not break or get dented, nor do they have sharp edges or rust/oxidize. Unless they make a less expensive model, with truely Plastic spools then there is no good reason to avoid these. Graphite is far superior to aluminum IMHO.
If I agreed with you we would both be wrong!
