I popped a few holes about 10 feet from shore on lower fire lake yesterday and the ice was about 4 1/2 clear ice and 1 inch foggy ice, is that safe to fish on?

Depends on on what you are planning on doing. Go light, use a spud to check the ice as you go and don't forget the life jacket and picks and you are all set. Also would be a good idea to take a buddy and a rope just in case. The problem with early ice is it can go from 4 inches to 1 inch pretty quick if there are currents or something screwy going on. I'd kill for 4.5 inches of clear ice and will be out as soon as I get 3 or so with my picks and life jacket of course

Thanks, thats what I figured. I read somewhere that 4in of ice can support 500lbs per sq foot, we'll see I guess

Not ruling out safety first, I'd follow the advise with a spud and some hand held ice picks "just in case!" 5" is plenty of ice IMHO! I think the expansion cracking scares me more than the thickness...

Go with the spud bare and measure the ice depth as your walking out, if its consistant and you know that the lake doesnt have huge currents and also any hot springs then you should be fine

I've fished on less. Every sheet of ice is different. Just bring picks...

WE have 6"s of ice and I haven't even gone out yet. I guess I'm getting soft because I seem to be spending a little more time on the computer looking for women who love 2 fish since I got divorced than when I was out

Well me and some buddies are going out to Big Lake on saturday for the first trip of the year, I'll let you guys know how it was!!! I cut another hole at fire lake and the ice is about 5-6in of clear ice now, so by saturday it should be plenty good????Hopefully

Put on your pants and go fishing!!!

There is plenty of time for that in the spring. You will just need to get a cat or dog to put in the blankets this winter.

Well we ended up going to Beer Can and caught quite a few fish, nothing big. The ice was about 8in thick.

i'm sitting here in short sleeves when its Nov 3rd and 70 outside and he's complaining of not catching anything big thru 8 inches of ice. Geez , the nerve of some people !

Now I even have people introucing me to their daughters at church, jezz. I guess decent looking real men

around my area are scarce as well as decent looking honest women. Hopefully some of them like to ice fish and aren't opposed to sleeping in a cabin on the ice.

70 degrees WOW!!!!!!! I don't want to hear it....we just had the coldest recorded summer since 1931, with 0 days over 70. Enjoy it while you can.

I did get out today for Veterans Day and had a blast. I took a buddy of mine who is a big game guide and loves to fish but has never been ice fishing until today. I gave him the lucky hole and it paid off big for me to see him catch all those fish. I'll post pics later when I get them.

You should have plenty of ice to fish. Our rule of thumb for first ice is 2.5" as long as it good and clear
