There were sure a couple of guys on the ice this morning at 10,000' who couldn't get their auger to light. At least they'll have a couple of hours of drive time going home to reflect

that maybe they should have gone the drill/Clam route after all. Milwaukee Fuel and Rigid Octane are the premium choices for power unit. Drills can be Mora, Eskimo or Nero which I

have, I don't care for the K=Drill personally. No need to overthink this. The true path lies before your eyes.

That Strikemaster Lithium would be a good choice if you don't want to scab together a bunch of components.

“This X2.”

With a 5lb cordless attached to a 5lb clam plate using a 5lb auger blade the setup quickly becomes quite cumber. This is just considering the comparison of cordless drill vs. propane. Electric vs. propane is a different comparison entirely.

What about the unwieldy rpms of a cordless vs. a propane auger with a gearbox designed specifically to maintain auger speed for cutting ice efficiently? I know that Clam tried implementing a gearbox of their own but it’s been a flop. I guess that’s why the plate is effective, it’s because of the levered throttle modulation. Pulling a trigger on the drill with one finger is probably a bear.

Just got done drilling around 80-  8" holes thru 4-5 hard inches of ice at Antero yesterday. Milwaukee fuel/ clam plate/ mora setup. Still had 2 bars on a 5AH battery.

Why would anyone use anything else? ;)

Truer words may have never been said. This system has been flawless thus far, can't see myself using anything else! (That is until we are going thru 20+ inches @ Granby or 11mile in Feb, may have to break out the old 10inch gasser for that one)  ;)

There aren’t any “hard” inches of ice with my gasser, nor have I needed to cut 80 holes in a few hours to find average fish. Those are the truest words.

I don’t know if it’s elevation or the extreme cold, but I don’t trust propane.  Maybe it’s  a problem with the buddy heater but my experiences have been pretty crappy in real cold conditions trusting propane.

I can’t comment on the drill combo, but I trust electric, and my experience has been with the ION. It’s just a bad ass rig.  It’s like the Tesla of augers.   I love my Honda and it has never failed me, always starts, easy on gas, and it’s a 4 stroke, but using my buddies ION I’m convinced it’s a superior option.   I didn’t want to like it, as I told him to get a Honda, but after a season of use I’m a fan.

Yep, it feels like we've picked up an internet troll like the sudden onset of hemorrhoids. The Colorado board has always been an untidy house but we've never had cockroaches.
We're born, we live for a while, and then we die.  Sounds like a good reason to go ice fishing.

Mr. Twister-  80 holes divided between 3 guys times 9 hours.   "Hard" refers to type of ice on the lake. Also refers to that airbag above your shoulders. ;D

So, no input on the gearbox discussion I posed about the cordless drill setup?
Instead, tough guys act like children calling people names and bullying them out of their club?

I know this thread is analagous to a Ford v Chevy v Dodge discussion but I've come with valid inquiry.

Simple. Don't need a gearbox.

I don't feel like a bully when I'm trying to get a raccoon out of my kitchen. Clam hasn't had a gear box on the plates for several years as you should have known before you chimed in. Not a valid inquiry, as you say. You're a gas auger guy and more power to you but that's not what this thread's about. When you have something valuable to

contribute and can keep a civil tongue in your head then you're most welcome.

Don't put words in my mouth. I like gas machines, you're right, but I know electrics and cordless drills are advantageous. I want one and I'm considering a purchase. If you fail to realize the importance of a gearbox and Clam themselves went through years of R&D to develop one then it is certainly a valid concern.
This boys club needs more diversity since everyone likes to drink from the long end of Slayer every time he posts.  I didn't realize that this forum is as near and dear to your heart, like your kitchen is. Would you rather that I post big fish photos with their locations so it's easier for you to brag online? That's not what this forum considers valuable and contributory.

What is it with you and gear boxes? Clam tried them and discarded the concept as unnecessary and trouble prone. With the torque available on the modern drills you don't need gears to provide mechanical advantage anymore. The Clam plate is more useful to provide some leverage to keep those drills from twisting your arm off at the root.

Slayer can take care of himself and he often intimidates the weak.. He's actually earned respect unlike some people. I spent 42 years in construction and only rarely did I meet with this same combination of arrogance and ignorance as I found here yesterday. No, I don't want you to post your pictures of big fish and their locations. I'd prefer that you post on the New Hampshire board.

When you decide to buy an electric auger , we'll be happy to offer advice based on a wealth of experience.

Appreciate everyone feedback and help on the auger topic. I broke down and bought a Kdrill on sale for Black Friday. Looking forward to see how it works and will hopefully have luck using it with my Dewalt! Thanks again!!!
