Ice Fishing Snowmobile; what accessories?
« on: Sep 14, 2021, 09:31 AM »
I recently purchased a 1994 Polaris Indy Trail Deluxe that I plan to use for ice fishing.  It's obviously an older sled, but taken care of well and has 2800 miles on it.  488 air cooled, reverse, electric start, handwarmers, and most importantly 2-up.  Looking forward to having this for when the ATV isn't the right tool to get out on the ice, and I didn't have to invest a ton.

I know I want to get some ice auger brackets/clamps for the strike light, and something to hold the phone/gps on the handlebars for navigation.  What else???

I like to rivet saddle bags or similar items to the sled so that I have ample space to store my tackle and stuff like that.

I mounted a Johnson Cargo Rack and bucket rings to my ‘94 Trail Deluxe. I use a Garmin EchoMap 43 as my navigation unit and mounted it to the handlebar with a RAM bracket to help keep the vibration down. Also added a lighted compass that is mounted to the sled’s hood. On the front I have a Jaws of Ice auger rack and an added 10” LED light. Put in two relayed switches to operate the navigation unit and the light. I run on Saginaw Bay where one can run a long way on bare ice so I also put a pair of ice scratchers on to help throw ice shavings into the track tunnel to keep the slides cool. My track is studded and I run 8” carbide skegs on the ski’s - huge help on bare ice and hardpack snow in addition to slush.

Your biggest decision is if you are going to put stuff in a sled. If not, you need a rack to carry the stuff. Not sure what you have behind the seats, so you may need to fabricate an extension there. Putting your gear in a sled is tough on it when the ice is rough, and pulling a sled makes it more likely you will get stuck.

Next thing to plan for is getting un-stuck. I carry a snobunjie, shovel, and a pull tape. I also carry a pull harness that attaches to the suspension, since I have an older sled like you and it has broken down.

Bucket Ramp, where did you get that Johnson cargo holder system?  I looked and it seemed like they are out of business.  That setup on the back would be perfect! Anyone know if there are any out there?

Some links I kicked across ..some nice suggestions/pictures above as well ... an all around rack for snowmobile is a topic the pops up from time to time ...I dont recall if there was a solution to the need/dilemma. May be try Polaris directly .

Found some pictures of the Indy deluxe- Looks like it would be easy to add some angle iron brackets sticking out the back where they have the seat back support and make whatever you need. If you have access to a welder, easier still, but still possible to make something with bolted/riveted.
My second seat was removable, so I had plenty of room to add a box on top of the tunnel on my 2007 GTX

That is what I was talking about- you can extend the tunnel on most machines to make a rack like utility sleds. Takes a little fabrication skill, but I would bet even if you don't weld you could bolt something up. This is larger than you need for gear- it holds an entire flip over shanty.

I shortened the seat to add a shanty rack, keeps things well balanced. If you don't have the fabrication skills, plan out with what exactly what you want with drawing and measurements and have it done. Well detailed plans will cut costs and in the end just a little more than purchasing a pre-fab accessory that you will be trying to make it fit your needs and your sled. That's just the way I went. I am glad I kept the shanty up off the ice. Your imagination is the only limit. Good luck and post picture of your Ice Fishing Machine!

Scratcher are a good accessory for wind-blown, bare ice.

Rod holders

Added a shovel holder last year...

Again good luck with your project!

Here is a tank bag that I use. I re-enforced the bag with plastic inside(5gal bucket material) around the outside edge to support my flasher sitting on top. I have a handle bar bag(not pictured) and a windshield bag also.

I think I'm going to get some auger clamps and mount those on the front of the sled.  I use a strike lite so the weight and size isn't much, and then I can focus on storage on the back.  ON this Indy Trail Deluxe I think a person could mount these clamps right on the front "bumper" part of the sled.  Maybe get a little larger clamps, or run one set of clamps up and one forward then I could put the strike lite in one set and a lite extendable shovel in the other.

These might suit you better ..less real-estate on the mounting brackets ..I run a double mount on my ATV . I did not place my SM gas auger in the rifle mount it self but nestled it in between the double mount ..also room for my 53 inch Frabill chisel. I am assuming you have a drill and/or Clam Plate ..if so I would incorporate a bracted to the rifle mount which will support the dril or Clam Plate ...or you could just incorporate  The ION quick release or the EZ AUGER CONNECTION SYSTEM

I bet I could use the Kolpin Rhino Double, mounted on the front bumper of the sled, and have the Strike Lite auger (I don't travel with the drill attached, take that off and in cargo box or sled) and a small shovel secured very nicely and securely...leaving the back for other cargo accessories.  And for $40 total....

Maybe you could add a auto cargo rack ..I suggest aluminum ..could rig it with some aluminum tubing or square stock and stainless steel hardware ...

I made a couple purchases for the sled and maybe the atv.

Got the Kolpin Double Rhinos to hopefully secure on the front of the Indy Trail Deluxe (on the bumper) to hold the strike light (drill detached) and an expandable shovel.

Also bought the two handle bar phone mounts in the pics. Ideally one would work on the sled and the other on the atv.

I’ll wait for mods/racks on the back of the sled to see how I use it. Same with the atv. If the kolpin double rhinos work well on the sled i may get another set for the front of the atv.
