tip ups Vs. jigging
« on: Jan 13, 2004, 02:23 PM »
though on most lakes you can set up 6 tip ups many people argue that you can produce bigger numbers jigging.  true jigging you can be more mobile but with tip ups you can cover a large space in one shot.  what do you guys think is the most effective approach- or are the both equal in a sence :'( :'(

Depends on the day, the fish and the lake.  Best bet is to do both find the tech that is working best and concentrate on it for the run/day
When the going gets weird the weird turn pro.

We are only allowed two holes. Most people I know put out two tipups and just happen to have there shanty over another(maybe they jig in there with a third one).

One way I make the most of my two tipups is putting spreaders on them so I am still at the legal maximum number of hooks, which is two per lines. The nice thing about this is that if one minnow dies the other will keep it moving. :)

:D In Ct., we can have 6 holes working at one time. I've had 4 flags at once when a school comes through. You have to grab one, set the hook, judge if its big or drop it to run for the chance of a bigger fish on another tipup.  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

I always put the tip ups in when i'm fishing eyes. Two times last year they save the trip.jigging has always been a dependable producer for those active fish.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an  well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, A fishing pole in one hand, beer in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming \"WOO HOO, what a ride!

In Ontario we can have only 2 lines and I used to set up a
tip-up and jig another hole. Some time ago I stopped using
tip-ups completely - takes a lot of time to move it + all the
troubles with live bait. Added to my  mobility a lot, and my
catches got way better. My favorite lakes now are those
with the live bait ban and 1 line through the ice.

I always go with the tip ups. The exception is one lake where jigging out fishes them. You can fish right in the middle of 4 tip ups, and they will hit the jig. Never figured that one out yet.        olds
