Best Hub Shanty
« on: Dec 31, 2021, 11:30 AM »
I'm thinking it might be time to get a new shanty.  I've had the Cabelas 5 Sided 360 for a several seasons now and one of the zippers is shot.  I had to cut it so I can zip a section up but will still only zip like 2/3 of the way.  I really like having the windows surrounding the full shanty so you can see flags easier and the fishable space is quite large with 3 people being able to fish w a good amount of gear in there.

Is fixing the zipper an option?  Outside of that it is in fine shape.

Any suggestions for a new hub?  The Otter Lodge is nice but seems to lack windows, as do most others out there IMO.

Take it to your local clothes alterations shop... They may be able to sew on a new zipper....

Pat, I totally agree with Doeslayer that it would be worth the attempt. Most shanties, especially hubs, put the windows at the wrong height imo. At least weight wont be an issue this season. HNY

Pat, I once brought my carhart bibs to "zipper doctor" who is  now out of business. And they charged me 40 a leg to fix and I brought them zippers direct from carhart. I was shocked at the cost but I also know nothing about the labor/tools involved

I lubricate all of my shelters with vazoline. No more trouble with zippers. It has a freeze point -49. Use it on everything, bowcases, boat curtain zippers.

Ha if you knew Vin, Sully you'd know there isnt an old lady out there capable enough to do that.

Pat there is no "best" hub aside from the one you think is best.  I still habe my cabelas 360 its like 10 years old, it serves a purpose occassionally.  I love the otter resort pop up I got last year but cant claim it's the best.  Best at what?  Being light? Durable? Heat retention?  Which of those are important to you?

This is my 2nd season with the Eskimo 3i. I absolutely love it. Lightweight, super quick set up and take down. I only wish it had some tie down points on the sides as sometimes the wind changes direction and a side will get pushed in, but that only happened a couple of times last year.

I've got an Eskimo quickfish 3, i dont use it a ton, it is easy to set up once you practice a little, it's not overly heavy and has windows 360, my biggest beef is the door design, it's/they are triangular,,, I think they may have changed the door on the newer models because it was a common complaint.

Paid like 50 bucks last year to get the leg zipper replaced in my bibs last year, much cheaper than new.

The best hub shanty for me is all about the features ...for me its a wide bottom ,insulated ,grommets in the skirt ,tie down kit straps w/proper anchors. That is what attracted me to the Eskimo 949i a couple years back add a killer deal from DSG and I was sold. Since then some improvemts from Otter have caught my eye..the cinch straps on the hub coners as well as the full door ... Eskimo has since added a full door to their hub line up ...as did some Cabela's hubs .

I'll have to check out the Eskimo.  It seems to be the most recommended so far.  The large wide bottom for a bigger floor plan and tie downs are high on my list.

My best was hand through the gill of a big momma pike and into the teeth.  She was fine my hand was mauled.  Needed to get the fish inside to avoid freezing its eyes and boy did it cost me.
