Jiffy Torch synthetic auger.
« on: Nov 09, 2021, 09:38 PM »
So….Jiffy came out and priced this thing right. $149 for 8in regular price.

It has a steel hex shaft, and a different take with what looks like a revamped jiffy ripper cutting head blade mount, and a center point.

This might be a solid wheelhouse auger.

My question is….

#1…..Does this auger have a cutting head/blade cover?

#2…..Is the cutting head mount made of metal or synthetic material?

#3….With the quick attach/release….what extensions work with it?

# 2 My best guess is it is metal

# 3 The video looks to be a regular attachment ...and some of the sites that have it dont show a very good picture ..I did kick accross this

Agreed, no way would I be putting it back in the back after every use or moving spots. I'm sure it will not be long and a company like Cold Snap makes one but in the meantime what to do.

Jiffy gas auger cover probably would work but should be included.

Well,

I called Jiffy to get details, because none of the info on the web seemed to answer my questions.

First, the torch comes it two ways.

1 is with a bag that has a built in head over in the bag.

2 is just the Jiffy torch auger that comes with a jiffy snap on head cover. So a cold snap jiffy cover would probably fit if a person wanted a cold snap cover.

I asked him what the cutting head was made of and he said metal. Then asked why I wanted to know.

I explained that on the augers with the metal steel ring around the bottom. When they get dropped or banged around that they can get bent and mess the head up. Hence why eskimo/ion have moved to a non metal cutting head mount that would flex a bit.

The guy did make some solid selling points to me on the torch after that.

1 was the steel shaft in the auger was less likely to bend or break vs the aluminum ones others had.

Also, that the jiffy cutting head mount wasn’t a thin ring around the bottom that would bend easy like the shaver style ones on the market, but an entire metal plate.

Also that the issue with the shave style heads with the metal rig is that the ring doesn’t have much support so it can get bent, where the entire plate style on the torch gives more support to prevent the ring from being bent. Hence the steel shaft, so if cutting head does get banged it won’t bend the main shaft.

Cutting head is a very solid flat steel plate with a large point. I wouldn’t worry about the cutting head getting bent. Chipper blade is solid. Should work well in the wheel house.

Typical of Jiffy….they have to screw the pooch on something.

The shaft that the drill plate goes into, well there is nothing there…just a hollow pipe end. Zero…absolutely Zero added support. With a hex shaft, and a round drill plate shaft…then the quick swap jiffy pin.

1. I can already tell jiffy is going to have issues with this. 1200in/lbs plus…the pin is going to bend/wear the drilled hole out without having any extra support. I also personally do not like these quick swap pins.  There is nothing quick about them..I’d rather have a screw knob holding it tight.

2. Trying to modify or put this on a clam plate…looks like a freaking PITA. Any $$ savings vs the other synthetic is going to easily be spent trying to put it on a clam plate.

Snap cover is great on it…no need for a cold snap cover.

Add to the torque on top the aggressive chipper on the bottom and it might be a recipe for disaster.

That’s what I am afraid of…..

I was feeling like Jiffy had a solid product going….Nice Price point……chipper style for reopening holes….maybe a touch slower auger which if it was would be perfect in the wheel house for not throwing chips…..until I took the drill plate adaptor out.

I mean whoever designed this at jiffy must have been smoking to much crack. Even a village idiot would know that thin pipe wall isn’t going to hold up.

Pretty much….it looks like the auger was invented to use up the extra parts jiffy had on hand.

Just took a look at my strike master 24v, connection isn't much beefier although it is a bolt instead of a pin. Time will tell

Do you have a picture? I'd like to see it. Honestly, it shouldn't take much to beef it up. A simple ringed collar on the inside or outside would do it?

I'd also be interested to see what the Eskimo Pistol Bit looked like.

I am assuming they have more support.....I'm thinking about returning it to a store tomorrow and getting the pistol bit.

Looks like the normal pipe like the jiffy with an aluminum collar around it for support. At least Strikemaster was smart enough to reinforce

Just and FYI….I returned the jiffy Torch

Why did you return it ?

The quick swap pin which I hated and the lack of any reinforcement around the pin area.

I think jiffy is going to have issues with the pin wearing and messing up the pin hole in the thin metal shaft

Acme had $209, didn’t check shipping. I still think if you wait they will be down by when you need it. Mine was $129 or $149 (?) right after Thanksgiving at Fleet.

I think $149 if I recall ..but no ship to home..I also believe Mills ads are up ..some live ..some not ..it looks like the free ship code expires before the ice gear goes on sale .

Free ship on the Pistol from ACME .

I always loved my old Jiffy 3hp, I probably would have bought this if it wasn’t 5 years late to the party.  I’m still married to the KDrill.
