Vexilar inbound!
« on: Oct 21, 2021, 01:45 PM »
Ordered an FLX12 pro pack, 19 transducer, neoprene cover, and Ultra pack shuttle.
Got rid of my hummingbird flasher after being tired of dealing with false bottom readings and it's washed out and dim dial appearance outside and in the sun.

I hole hop outside most of the time on a river with significant current so it was getting to be an issue because you can only sit facing one direction on a river like that.

The extra shuttle was just to try out and see which I like better the pro pack or ultra pack.

Getting excited but we're still about 9 weeks away from fishable ice here.

It's a big difference, I went from an Ice35 to a FLX28, fish outside a lot in the sun. As far as I know, all the FLX have the same main screen & brightness. Seemed like I had keep to turning or tilt the humminbird when the sun was strong, no problem with the FLX.

Never tried the ultrapack but mine came with pro pack and I didn't like it. I'd think the ultra would be better as it looks taller, and the float storage/handle looks better. I think the neoprene cover is a must without a case.

I have the Ultra pack on my FL18 stands taller ..I ditched the float for the most part and use the combo rod holder and Vexilar arm..I also use the Trophy Angler bag .I got an extra rod holder ..and both with work/goes through the TA bag ..3 rods for run-n-gunning one in hand two on the ultra case.

Well it arrived today and it's a great looking unit.
The Pro pack is ok, being a five gallon pail design, it fits in a humminbird case. Which is a bonus because I hate the Vexilar cases lol! With the tackle tray out there's lots of room at the front bottom for the float.

Getting 19 degree transducer was a big deal for me as I typically only fish in 5-25 fow and I've been spoiled by the Marcum 20 degree ducer and the humminbird 19 degree. A 12 would of course have been fine, but the 19 gives me optimum coverage for where I fish.

I'll mount the FLX12 on the ultra pack when it arrives and see if I like that set up more. I think it might be a bit too tall to fit in the hummingbird bag but with its enclosed battery and my neoprene cover I'm not really concerned about the elements.

Big leading factor that the ultra pack has for me is the increased height. If you could say one good thing about the Humminbird ice series it's that they have great height to them...same can't be said for most vexilar and marcum flashers as they literally come up a bit short for my liking.

I went with the FLX12 over the 20 because of the aforementioned depths that I fish and I didn't need to pay for zoom as I have it on my Garmin and Marcum units already.
I wanted a bright, no nonsense, accurate flasher for fishing in under 20 feet of water, plain and simple.
I'm always running two units at the same time so if I want to have zoom on, I'll have it in some form or another.
Back to the display on this thing, wow is it ever bright and sharp, and the night mode is awesome! Going to be great for those late evenings in pop up.

Update: I received the UltraPack shuttle but I found it not suited to my needs.

The front terminal posts should have been mounted on top of the battery enclosure. For me they are wasted in the front where they should have put a transducer holder instead.
The rear hard molded transducer holder is in a terrible position in my opinion. Especially if you try to squeeze this thing into a bag.

The bottom of the shuttle is also partially open so it sits directly on the ice and snow right next to the battery. Bad design IMO.
I also don't like the float holder on handle because I use a transducer arm.

The only thing I did like was the added height the bracket sits at.
