Title: Champlain whites
Post by: NHHARDWATER on Feb 16, 2019, 09:16 PM
Starting to get the itch for some whites. Does anyone have any updates on the bay or where folks are finding them in numbers recently?

Fished Hathaways today. There was a cluster of people off the end of the point, probably 5 or 6 different groups. Fished my way out there and only caught 1 keeper yellow, with only 2/12 holes producing any fish. Talked to two guys who were venturing away from the point to find fish, said that no one was having much action, but they did manage to catch one white. It was a slow day overall, but I think that it's safe to say that Hathaways is a dead zone right now. Any day now they should be schooling up and pushing their way into the bay. Fingers crossed for a good run! The more fish we can ice the better.

I went out yesterday started at hathaway's couldn't find any whites.
Yellow perch bite was real good for me just alot of dinks.
Pretty much non stop all day.
Every 15 or 20 you could get one keeper.
Im guessing couple more weeks.
Cant believe that theyre driving full sized trucks out there.
Ice is 12" thick some areas as little as 8".

I've been tracking whites in St. Albans for over 8 seasons now, they really didn't start showing up until after Valentine's Day every hardwater season, and they pretty much stay in the bay year round too, just have to find where the schools are roving.

Right after ice out, they're found near the black bridge and mill river, then after they spawn they move back out past Hathaway launch out towards Burton. They'll tend to stay in the drop off from shoreline in the 20' depth range on both sides of lazy lady/rock island.
They also follow the spawning wally's up the Mississquoi and come in thick at the Swanton dam.

I'm not worried... they're there, I've found them to be sporadic right now, half a pail one day, nothing the next...let's hope that March keeps good thick stable ice and then we'll all be happy as those roving schools will stack up thick near the green can as usual.

On another note, the alewives they're currently feeding on are small - 1-1/2-2" so perhaps need fatheads to match what they're chasing.
Got into some Saturday, worms worked best, but most were small.

Some years there were smelt in the bay and the whites were bigger jumbos those years, so perhaps the alewives lack of nutritional value has made them stunted in growth this season?
I know the few I got into between cowbanks and ball island in my boat last summer were smaller too.

MudChuck, PB, great info here thanks for the reports and update!
I brought my sone to Hathaways for his first time ever fishing the big lake, we got into them and he caught a Master angler class white (we dont submit it, but still an accomplishment). What an experience for him! He still talks about it and cant wait to come back!!!
Lets keep this thread rolling and track them down!
I will be on champ the next week or so hitting it hard for lakers..... possibly whites if someone sounds the alarm.
Good luck!

I'm having a hard time finding them right now, they're not where they usually are at this time of the season.
I fished Hathaway where I was into some about 3 weeks ago, nothing there now, tried way out on the outermost part of the bay on the hump and nothing but yellows.
Left there around noon and went to VE, went out to the 40-60' drop off and nothing but yellows.
This is interesting since for the last 9 seasons I've been able to get on them, now barely a pail full over several outings and at sporadic locations

I only fish for them in the summer once in a while with the kids.  So I can't speak about the winter bite however, I did notice last summer there were hardly any white perch boils in the inland sea in the evenings.  Typically on a night when it is calm you can see boils all over the place the last hour before dark.  It just didn't happen last year like it usually does.  I came back to the Hathaway launch at least 15 times in the evening last year and Appletree probably 5 times.  Something is different.  Anybody else notice this?

I'm a new registered member, so be easy on me!! ;D

I just got back home from fishing St. Aubin's bay.  Between my buddy and I, we caught about a bucket of whites.  About 1/3 of them were decent sized, the rest were average to small.   There was a large school of whites cruising around.  You had to be patient and wait for them to show up.  Then the action was fast and furious for maybe 10 minutes and then they were gone again. Also caught a boat load of small yellows.

People do in fact troll ice forums. Though as you said 1 bucket between 2 people seems not like they are saying the fishing was on fire. But in the past there have been trolls on here often intentionally causing ruckus and stirring the pot as trolls do.

I went out this afternoon after work, got on at rec park went over by the cam and tried my usual spots I’ve marked with Navionics, saw all the holes people had drilled over the weekend.
First spot right on top of hump 13’ I tried dropping chartreuse jig head with live minnows and nothing but dink yellows, tolerated that for about 1/2 hour and then moved to another spot a little deeper 24’ and the yellows got slightly bigger and no whites to be found but considering not much time to spend searching and hole hopping and not another soul out there I supposed they could be there but who knows since no one really is mentioning it on here if they are in the bay.

I'm not a troll (whatever that is).  I also post on the Lake Champlain United site as Greenhorn.  Like some of you said, the fishing was not what I consider hot, but there was a large school cruising around the bay and It feels like it could be the beginning of the chaos.  There was a group of three older gentlemen that cussed a lot fishing near us that also got into some whites  So, believe me or not, I will be up there this Sunday.  Whatever you decide, best of luck to you and be safe on the ice.

Light liner, we were midway between Hathaway point and the green can.

I agree with NH Hardwaters, the whites are not too picky (usually).  Having said that, my favorite lure is a PK minnow with a blade.  I use a perch colored one and a gold one most of the time.  We just used spikes as I don't know where to buy bait in the area since Bayside has closed up.

Crayfish2, do you fish the DYP?  I know Keithm87 does.  I'm looking forward to getting back on the boat, but before then, I will be fishing with NH Hardwater trying to hit the run of whites (even if he pegs me with a new knick name  ;D).  It is the primo ice fishing trip of the winter (when they are running).

They have been at Hathaways for the last 3 days. Guys filled jet sleds yesterday and I went today for 2 hours and filled a pale and half. Caught 14 that were over 14" which was great! We were on them for about an hour heavy and then they moved never to be found again. However, the wind held every person fishing there in one place. It was brutal and had to leave by 930 before my flip over blew away.

Is it still possible to drive onto the ice up there?

Well there were vehicles all around today, but beware and use good judgement as there were holes from the warm spell Friday that can swallow a person and certainly cause havoc with a wheel dropping into one of them.
To put things in perspective, there was 20” of ice this time last weekend and the warm spell and high sun have taken some of that away for good. I measure again this morning and it’s only 16”

I don’t think I’d drive out but that’s just me. I saw multiple vehicles drive over the crack coming off the point and was nervous that one wasn’t going to be so lucky.

I second this, I tapped a dark spot in the ice with my boot heel today right next to where I set up.  Broke clean through, no more than an inch of ice, probably 2 feet in diameter.  Easily 20” where my tip ups were. Be safe out there.

I was out in the bay yesterday with a good group of fishermen. Everyone seemed to be catching pretty steady.
I went home with about 2 buckets. The school held well with the group that was there. Still a bit sensitive to noise on the ice (jet sleds, vehicles etc) but hung around I assume due to the amount of jigs down there.

That may be my #1 pet peeve with fishing the madhouse that is hathaway when the whites are in. the inevitable guy who shows up with his 40 year old Jiffy that is louder than a harley and drills in the middle of the group scattering the fish! Got there at 7am today and there were already probably 7 vehicles and other people on foot out there. I walked around for an hour drilling holes but couldn't find them, didn't look like anyone else was. Popped a hole a bit later and then didn't have to move for almost 4 hours until I left. Managed about a bucket and a half but no 14" +. Was really feeling nice with the sun out by the time I left at 12:30.

I got out there around 9 and stopped by a guy on the outskirts of the group that said he was not catching anything and had nothing on the ice. So i figured the group was just that a group. Drove out to deeper water tried a few spots with only small yellows. Decided to drive back to the group park on the outside and walked in and found a spot to sit. Managed 63lbs. 45lbs of larges, multiple the size of some small bass. Couple of my big ones where just shy of 2lbs. Not a bad way to spend a day off from work!

Here’s the sad statistic..  For every one of us that care about & try to protect our outdoor environment there are 9 others who only see it as a place to exploit or a dumping ground for their refuse.  Except, they would go crazy if they woke up in the morning to find a bag of trash on their lawn.

Matt you're right about that, I've been fishing the Champlain area going on 20 years now, 10+ of them over hardwater, and St. Albans-Swanton is by far the trashiest of all the places I fish, so much so, it forced me to buy a small boat because some of the usual spots are not only trashy, but dangerous with needles and I cannot let those I love dearly, including my dog or my close friends that I want to introduce to fishing, be in places where needles are discarded to potentially hurt and infect.

It's sad that this area seems to have more people that access the lake/bays/rivers to fish, only to leave behind their trash and other nasty things like the needles and dirty diapers among other things.
Like Floatman said, if these people had the their trash dumps on their property they'd be outraged...

Most places don't seem to have this extent of trash, but they're are pockets down near Vergennes/Ferrisburgh that I've encountered greater amounts of trash.
I agree with most that comment here & on social media that those that do this are going to cause unintended consequences for all of us with less & less access to the waters we want to fish.

Ron White is right in that you can't fix stupid!
But it doesn't mean we all should have to tolerate it...if you see someone leaving trash/butts/beer cans or whatever behind, take a pic, we all carry phones with cameras now...and send it to the wardens...it's time to crack down and we all need to do our part.
I'm not one for liking this idea of snitching on those that are litterbugs, but if we just keep b***hing about it, and turning a blind eye to it all without doing something ourselves about it, we will lose more areas to access from or other adverse consequences.

Fully agree with that area being nasty. We were at tabors last week and there was a pile of needles in the parking lot.

That said, there are times when littering is unintentional. For instance, when the wind is blowing 25mph on the ice, if a can or bag take off, they are not going to be caught on foot. I had my bait slip take off saturday, it was 200ft away in no time, and was out of site in like 4 seconds. But I try to make up for anything like that by picking up things I find.

Yeah trash left behind by fishermen is concerning. I know a lot of people who pick up stuff when they see it. A couple years ago I ditch fished in the early spring for pan fish. I hit Charcoal one day and was shocked at all the trash along the shore and in the water. The next day I went back and filled a 45 gal trash bag with various trash. When I returned a few days later it was just as bad. I guess mentioning it on social media is a good start along with sportsmen making a point of taking more off the ice/ water than they brought in. Every little bit helps.

Went out for 3 hours last night in hopes of finding a master angler size white. Walked and drilled the entire time and only saw them once for a brief second on my finder near dusk. Only other thing I found was tons of cigarette butts and a huge pile of dink perch left on the ice  >:(

Definitely some keeper yellows though like previously mentioned, just gotta weed through the dinks. The other people I saw out there also said they were more towards Hathaway. Like Mudchuck said there are a lot of holes that could swallow a tire and are barely skimmed over. I could break through them with ease. Ended up with a little under 3 buckets today. Pretty much everyone was catching fish. Saw one guy catch a 22.75 inch whitefish. The school was moving around a lot in the morning, but once it settled down we were able to fish the same area and stay on top of a load of fish. The trick was getting them to bite. Small halis tipped with spikes seemed to work quite well for the light biters. A great day on the ice!

Just over a foot of ice. Sun has begun to turn it into a candlesticks and the auger zips through it like butter. Strong enough to support a few wheelers, side-by-sides and snowmobiles. Shores are holding up pretty well, but they were getting a little sloppy towards the end of the day. The pressure crack that goes from Hathaways out toward the green can is sketchy looking, but passable, for now. Good luck and be safe! Wear your ice picks and bring a buddy if you go.

Yes, it was a good time.  It was great to meet you, NHHardwater and CBIce!  Didn't know Light Liner was out there, as well.

As usual, Perchbait outfished me by over 2:1.  He had the "secret" bait this time, I guess.  I changed things up a few times but they seemed pretty tight-lipped.  Still a great day on the ice.  We sold ~2 buckets of whites and we brought home a FULL bucket to clean.  About 1hr of cleaning and we had a nice pile of fillets for the freezer.

I was hoping the cold nights the next few days would keep the ice firmed up, but this bright sun is going to do a number on it.  We could tell the difference in how the auger behaved yesterday between drilling holes in the morning vs afternoon.  Still over a foot of ice, but it's getting punky.  That's Ok ... I'm ready to get the boat out!

The guy in St. A was buying them for .40/pound for large (9.5" +) and .20/pound for smalls (8.5-9.5").  We got $15 for a little over 1.5 buckets-worth, or so.  We brought home all of the shorts (<8.5") and, like I said, had a very full bucket to clean.  I think those are the better tasting fish, anyway!

Hard to believe that there could be thousands of fish in there one day and then nothing the next. They are still around some where. I think it helps having a QUIET circus out there to keep the school in one place. My Dad and I were fishing in the middle of the pack and had fish beneath us for most of the day. Somedays they are much more sensitive to commotion on the ice than others, that's for sure!

They were still there today in good numbers, I saw many people pulling em up non stop. The size we were catching weren’t running as big as last week but still had fun. I filled a 5gal pail and the other two fishing next to me did over half each. Some of the other guys were doing better with their electronics but I don’t have that, maybe next year.

I was wondering about that as well! Not sure if Panoptix would play nicely with other sonar units though, interference wise. My garmin unit was picking up a lot of chatter with all the transducers in the water last weekend! Good luck and stay safe if you make the trip up.

koissu- we were there from about 845-noon. The first 2 sets of holes we drilled produced pretty well for a while then we had to move around a little bit. We’re you out there? We were the 2 guys just beyond the group and invited a third guy who was hunting around with little luck to fish with us. He ended up doing decent too.

Nope! I tend to have better luck in the morning there, so I was curious. I went out today in the afternoon. A guy I met last time and pulled him over to fish with me was leaving, and guided me straight to his spot where he had filled a few buckets throughout the morning. We were there for about 2.5 hours right on top of a school but man they were not biting. I tried a lot of different lures and you could see them on the screen following up and down and not biting. But they were there the whole time. Nothing like the constant action last time. My last fish was just over 13" so I did manage a master angler which is why I went back. This is actually it for me this season!

Went out yesterday from 3 to 6 and easily filled a bucket and a half. Some very nice people donated some more that they didn't have room for in their buckets so I ended up with 12 gallons total. There is still 12" of ice but the pressure crack looked sketchy. I was certainly not going to walk over and take a closer look. That was my last time out for the year but what a great way to end the hard water season!

One side of hathaway is broken up about 10' out..other side is on it's way. Main ice is surprisingly decent...just getting on is the issue.  Long boards will extend the season a few days to a week or so.  Pressure crack is 10' wide in spots.

That was pickerelslayer and I right next to you in the Clam.  We probably ended up with 2 1/2  buckets before we headed out around 11.  They were biting well but we really didn't feel like cleaning anymore than that.  These next cooler nights should keep that ice around a bit longer.

They slowed for me after you guys left and I started searching until the guy in the twisted tea shanty called me over and said he was on them all day and they were still there.  Polished off my 3rd bucket and headed home after chatting with the guy (almost a 3 hour drive for him, he  was from NH!)

I saw a post on another forum that someone caught a handful of Whites in the bay.
Ice conditions were 6" and shoreline was sketchy.

I heard they were starting to come in.
Ice is pretty much garbage though.

Yeah a buddy of mine got a few over the weekend. Said the ice wasn’t great though. I Don’t know if I’ll attempt it.

Can someone update this thread when a kayak can get 50 feet off shore? Or answer how long until you can kayak to the green can? Be nice to get some whites outta the lake, not bad eating either. Sucks the ice season was rough at times and ended but definitely ready for spring runs I forget how to upload photos here or I woulda uploaded some pics. This year was great! Just not always great ice....

I live in the area and drove down through, most of the shore is shot with large areas of open water, the gate to the camps on point rd is closed. you could get on from the state park and walk out in a couple areas, but i imagine with the continued warm weather and the rain that is forecasted what is left of shore will be gone soon.

I caught my first 8 white perch on ice today. Couldn't find any big schools, they were mainly lone fish mixed in with yellows. Quebec side of Memphremagog, very close to VT border.

Hit a new spot (in Quebec again) for white perch today. Took me 5 hours to finally find a few, but the quality made up for lack of quantity. At 13 and 14.5 inches, with one over 2 lbs, these bass sized panfish make me think I'm gonna need a bigger pan.

Tough bite for white perch at the spot I went to a few days ago, finally found a nice one just before leaving.

Big surprise was catching 5 bass, the lunker going nearly 4 lbs.

I went down that way today.  ice is all broke up. the bay was about 2/3 floating ice and the rest is open water. most all ice is near the north and east shores , as we get mainly west/northwest and south winds. From the point it looks like open water out to about as far as the green can. The wind will keep the ice moving until it sinks.
