Smith and Morehouse?
« on: Jan 11, 2015, 03:39 PM »
Just wondering if anyone ever rides their sleds or hikes to Smith and Morehouse reservoir and fishes in the winter? I’ve got Monday off and might give it a try. It could end up being just a really long hike if the lake doesn’t have ice.  ;D

Well, I gave it a go and it payed off!

There was about 10" of fresh snow on the road going up to the reservoir. It took a little over an hour to hike to the lake and it was snowing hard the whole way. Finally got to the lake and there was no sign of other people being there for at least a couple days. Saw some very faint snowmobile tracks crossing the lake but they were almost burried with the new snow. Picked a spot close to the dam and chopped two holes (brought an axe with instead of the auger since my blades are dinged up and am waiting on the new blades from amazon) through 8" of clear ice. Fished 25-30 fow and marked lots of fish around 5-10 feet down. Ended up icing 6 12"+ rainbows in an hour and a half.

All in all a good day and totally worth the hike! I'll post pics later.

I have a coworker who said he drove up there one year in the snow and it took a really long time and it was pretty sketchy. You might be able to do it but I wouldn't recommend it. Unless you've got a snowmobile the only other way is to hike it.

I enlisted the help of my dog to assist with the sled pulling.

He tires easily.  ;D

You can see my square axe chopped hole in the background. haha

Many years ago, we used to hike in there and ice fish quite a bit. I had posted the trips on another forum, but the pics are no longer there. I can't even find them on my backup drive...  :(

Thanks for the trip down memory lane!!  You can almost hear the silent solitude in your pics!  ;)
