New to the Forum
« on: Nov 30, 2018, 11:45 AM »
Hello all. I'm new to the forum, so wanted to introduce myself. I didn't see an intro section. My name's Steve and this will be only my second season ice fishing. Mostly targeting perch across upstate NY and western MA. Started ice fishing to have another avenue to dump a bunch of money into fishing! Looking forward to learning from you all and contributing to the forum wherever I can.

Steve, you are as welcome as the flowers in May. As you note, there will be plenty of opportunities to free yourself of some surplus capital but strictly speaking you really don't need

to spend much money to get set up for ice fishing. I usually advise newcomers to try to distinguish the difference between what you need and what you wish you needed. The toys

can come later after you learn the basics.
We're born, we live for a while, and then we die.  Sounds like a good reason to go ice fishing.

Welcome aboard....we all started "asking" and this site will help you on your way to some instructive answers....for local info just try to find the body of water you'll be fishing and I'm sure you'll get the help you need. Stay safe and have a great season.

Welcome, I'm also a Steve you have found a great website for ice fishing information. IF your personal schedule allows you may want to make a trip north to Lake George on Saturday Dec.15 TH one of this website's sponsors Fish 307 is having their ice fishing open house. The store is located near the intersection of routes 9&149 behind a Restaurant called the Log Jam. (Northern most of outlet malls when traveling north on route 9. I made the trip last year while a small store well stocked with gear there was a rep. from Stiker Ice at the event and the owner of Maki Plastics. Keep an on Fish 307's website should be posting on this year's event shortly. Have a safe and good season out on the ice.
Steve

The rep for striker is Todd frank and , Scott is the maki man , they both are very accomplished fishermen , if I lived closer I’d go to 307 ,

First, welcome to the OP, Steve. Ice Shanty is good fun, good info and great people. Glad you're here!

And second, @ LadyAngler1: Welcome to you you as well! The Shanty neighborhood just got a major upgrade... I could be more jealous of your companion except I'm an old guy and that would be just wrong.

We spend way too much time listening to sweaty guys that smell of wet wool, stale beer and bad cigars. Seriously, we just don't get enough diversity here. Sure, there's plenty of differing ideas from all across the continent (and some from across the oceans) but as far as representing and encouraging women to even try the ice fishing experience, well, it's just not there (yet).

Hopefully this is a preview of things to come. I saw it in musky fishing. When I started in the 70's very few of anyone did it and we were all male. Over time it grew in popularity and then it seemed like everyone wanted a swing at a musky but still a very gender specific deal. Then... I started seeing guys bringing their wives and girlfriends and the more I saw it the more I saw it. Now it's not uncommon at all to see women in the boat slingin' pounders with the best. I like that.

So (both of you) pull up a bucket and get comfortable. I'll even offer you a sip or a good cigar if you have a mind  ;)2
To fish or not to fish? That's a stupid question!
