First ice estimates.
« on: Nov 06, 2019, 03:51 PM »
Around what time do you think we will be on the ice this year? I remember last year I was on the ice by december or earlier. I finally got a gas auger this year and have been trying rigs all day. It's going to be a good season

“Around what time do you think we will be on the ice this year?”

I would guess about 7am.
It is looking good for an early start to the season.
I plan to live forever. So far so good!

Haha I'm hoping to be on the ice by Thanksgiving. I'm already seeing the edges frozen on the morning out of some puddle i found that's full of native brookies

Probably not until mid Dec in my area. My weekends are banged out until then anyway with hockey.
So around Christmas vacation week is when I'll get out!

Well as long as it does not rain tomorrow, this weekend may be doable considering there is a full skim of ice as of saturday.
Just add water.

Light skim coating on my shiner pond, had more ice this afternoon than it did in the morning today 11/13/19.

I found semi safe ice in central mass! One of my favorite ponds that I live down the street from has been locked up for a week now and I decided to check it with the spud bar today and surprisingly found 3" so I will be fishing Sunday. I think it's one of the first to freeze because its deepest point is 4ft but it has some monster largemouth and pickerel. Decently big pond too

Odd, I checked three spots in NW part of the state on Wednesday. One was wide open, another had a skim coating I couldn’t even get on and another had about an inch of ice that was cracking under my weight.

Dont mean to be "that guy" But first ice is always in the berkshires/NW part of the state, If theres 2" there then i have a hard time believing theres the same or MORE in central mass... Im calling BS

You will have to be more specific if you want to start predicting first ice, as region, elevation and size of the water body will dictate the likelihood of ice forming early.
I saw some skim ice formed around the shores of Mother's Brook in Hyde Park, but that will probably be gone by midday.

I am starting to get that feeling, the feeling and need for walks on the ice with my sled, bait and tackle looking for the first fish of the season.

I'm guessing earlier than last year at least?

General rule of thumb on the N Shore is New Years for mostly all ponds, anything earlier is a bonus, and it has happened earlier many years.
I aim for Thanksgiving weekend driving 2 hrs North to high elevation, and it's always there and thicker than expected.
