How fast doe it grow
« on: Dec 19, 2020, 05:51 PM »
Hello all, with the temps well below freezing at night, how fast does ice grow?
In winter we become gods and walk on water....

Roughly 1" for 15 freezing degree days.
Example
30° high - 20° low = 25° average for the day.
32° - 25° = 7 freezing degrees/day
7 fdd/ 15 fdd/inch = 0.46 inches
This is for capped lakes with clear ice and doesn't account for wind, water or snow.

No, I haven't.
Well it's f*cking exhilarating."

When I was a kid living on a lake in Central MA we had open water, then in one night we had safe ice 3-4" of crystal clear ice... That morning almost everyone that lived on the lake was out on it, you could not get it to crack and it was so clear we all spent a bunch of time on our bellies looking for fish. The conditions must have been perfect for that to happen.
