LAST ICE
« on: Feb 23, 2018, 07:45 AM »
here in greene co ,some of the ponds are at the last ice stage,-note the ice will tell you
what stage it is at not the month
the places i look for fish at last ice are
-sharp drops between the deep winter basin and thespawning beds
-sandy or gravel bottoms with weeds
-spawning sites in 2 to 10ft with weeds,brush-note water color makes a difference as to depth
NOTE- each body of water is different--north/south lake is different then greens lake here
i like to fish later now,let the sun warm thing up--gills will move for a 1/2 degree warmer  difference
 ;D ;D ;D

Bad ice can be identified by:

If you can scrape away a couple inches of ice surface with your boot.
Bad ice gets darker when it get water logged.
When you cut a hole you get slivers of ice instead of ice chips.

Beware we are very close on a lot of lakes now.

absolutely right... been on some ice like that a couple times. definitely not safe.. drill a hole in that and you'd think your auger is broken cause it aint drilling right.  another sign is the obvious number one--- honeycombing
When hell freezes over, i'll be ice fishing there too!!
