I live in the midwest now but have fond memories of fishing in New England as a kid.

I used a Mora (by hand, no drill stuff back then) with an extension on it when I was living in northern MN and bottomed it out a couple times. The ice will NEVER be too thick down here  :roflmao:

It was about 7-9" yesterday on the pond I was fishing. Temp was -2° this morning and is currently 3° here, so I imagine it'll pick up at least another inch by tomorrow. I'll be finding out around dawn.

Thickest for me was in Northern Minny on Christmas morning in 2000.......measured 25", I think. Got pics of that somewhere.....not many out on the lake that day. Was colder and windier than heck. Date is on pics but not temp...think it was like 5* above.

That's one perk of not getting much snow down this far south. Our season tends to be short, but rarely have to deal with slush, other than right before ice out when it's melting off fast.

I wouldn't mind having an old spoon, just for nostalgia's sake.

I will never complain about drilling too much ice in Indiana.  And I hand drill with a mora. Our seasons our too short, too often.  The thicker the better.

Pretty rare bird down here, I haven't seen one in probably 10 years or better.

My Dad always just used a piece of rubber hose with a cut in it for the blade on his. Used to have an old timer across the road from us a ways sharpen it. It cut great when sharp, but I remember it going dull pretty fast.

Ours was a blue Mora... little 4 or 5 incher. Good for perch or snake northerns, not much else.

I'm not complaining one bit.  Nothing over 5" around here.  Looks like starting next Wed high 40's with rain for three days.  Better get out while you can.

Drilled the neighbor's pond yesterday down here in south central Indiana to check the ice.  Got a whopping 2 inches and change.  Some people are finding a little more if you have a high hill blocking some sun. Tried to haul in some firewood with the tractor and had to quit in the afternoon as the sun had already thawed the ground out on top so much that it was getting muddy even though the temps were below freezing.  Don't want to hear any belly aching on having only 6 inches, LOL.  We pray for the chance of 6 inches down here !!!

We're definitely making some ice today. I'll be hitting the same pond I fished the other day at dawn. I bet it's 8-10" thick out there this morning, given it was -2° here yesterday morning.

oh, I forgot to say I do have one of them spoon thingys hanging on the shed wall, but lost the sharpened spud that I used before that and going high tech with the spoon.  I think I was using the sharpened spud to peel bark off fence posts in the lean ice years.  Probably laying out in the woods somewhere. I'm still looking for the propeller hats ... I know I put them away somewhere.
