bait the jig or not?
« on: Dec 24, 2004, 09:46 PM »
Ive been around some people and there just using a jig with nothing on it and catch a lot. I usually use a waxie on my jig. Which way works best? And what works best if you do bait them?

Pretty much have to use bait in my opinion to really draw hits. Usually it's the bait that draws the hit and not the lure. The lure though may help attract fish to the bait. The only type of lure I have had consistant success on without using bait is a swimming lure like a jigging rapala. I once caught a 5 pound rainbow on a do jigger spoon once without any bait on it. But then again, that's a rainbow trout were talking about. A vicous, aggressive, slobbering fool predator. So always go with bait in my book.

Have caught many fish on a very small jig on very slow days with only fish formula type stuff on it. Don't use live bait anymore, generally do very well with Gulp, PowerBait and the like.
