Newberry area ice conditions
« on: Dec 11, 2011, 02:41 PM »
I live in the Grand Rapids area, and was thinking about headed up to Newberry this coming weekend. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me if there is any fishable ice in that area, or if im just wasting my time. Thank you in advance.

Probably a waste of time...the lakes in St. Ignace are still half open and what ice there is out there may be 2.5 to 3" at best. I would say wait at least a week, and seeing what the weather is calling for I'd wait a few.

not to mention, Newberry always is a midwinter freeze area because they do get more snow then the rest of the region. I myself, love to fish the area becasue there are a lot of small lakes right in that area but I won't even bother to check them til later on. I know last year, I didn't have safe on my few favorite lakes over there until middle of January and even then I only had 7inches of ice at best.
