ice rigger,jaw jacker,automatic fisherman?

Anyone use on of these?what's the difference between them? Price for ice rigger is $20,jaw jacker and automatic is $40 ?

No.

A pole/rod holder with a flag, a plastic device with adjustable trigger, a string with wire trigger.       

The former is free spool, 2nd & 3rd listed above set the hook.       

I make my own.     

It's a simple DIY project.     

They work great, once the principle is understood.       

Have you tried using the search feature ?  Use the word 'homemade' in your search.

I'm not looking to make one,just wondering how they work and the difference in all 3?and why they are priced different? Everyone swears the jaw jacker.

Good luck making one ~ it's very rewarding to make it yourself and have it operate successfully.     

They can be cobbled together with arm loads of wood, wire, string and sundry gewgaws.       

The basics are: rod, rod-holder, trigger and attaching apparatus.       

Best think it out, then begin.

What could possibly go wrong ?

I have seen some pretty good homemade setups. I used the jawjacker for the first time this year and I really like it. Hooked every grayling right on the nose. Sorry haven't tried the other ones, no need, I got lucky with the jawjacker.

I do think I am going to make an automatic hooker upper, just because, why not..see how it works.

Best check your State regulations.

but what if you have 5 lines connected to one huge long line so it looks like TTTTT? would that be considered 1 line or 5?

I'll guess that would be one line and could only have 5 hooks.

Ive got a custom slapper tipup a guy made me out of birch wood that is pretty nice and never used it.  He built them and sold a lot of them in Michigan for guys who target steelhead through the ice.  I'd love to try mine out but heard the guys who fish for steelies through the ice don't take well to "outsiders" or "newbies".

Never heard them referred to as a "Slapper", though it does fit well.     

I like 'open carry' for snow snakes.   Helps get you some elbow room and fewer complaints from Great Lakes 'owners'.

First off the Jaw Jacker and automatic Fisherman set the hook for you, while the ice rigger is more like a tip up. You set it in free spool. When a fish takes the bait it triggers the flag. You in turn close the bail and as you feel it get tight, set the hook. I have a Jaw Jacker and an ice rigger. They both work. The Jacker is great for light biting trout.They give you a couple small jigs which you bait with a piece of meal worm.  The ice rigger works well on other species too.

I have used the JAW JACKER for 2 years, it's great but not on those fish that just nibble , works best on aggressive fish.

A couple feet of "free line" will get those nibblers when they can move off a ways and really take it.     

Easy if the line hangs loose between eyelets, no loops, yikes !

I own an Automatic fisherman and a Jaw jacker.
The Jaw jacker is IMHO a better unit. It seems to have more adjustment options and overall I like it better.

Would be a tip up here in NY, read what the dec defines as a tip up and you will see.  They are supposed to be changing the regs to 7 fishing devices next year, so that will do away with the questions as to what is what.

But the Jaw Jackers and the Automatic Fisherman style traps have no flags attached so theres no signal and are not clearly defined through the DEC's definition of the thing.

can't believe that it took 13 replies BEFORE the original question was addressed.
Iceattic - the difference has already been addressed by Curley, and nicely done. another one is the arctic warrior which is a tipdown/tipup combo. I have the AW and the Ice Rigger and enjoy using them both. love using a rod to pull in the fish vs hand lining them. although I don't mide hand lining either.

I have the jaw jacker and the automatic fisherman and I agree with kasilofchrisn, I like the jaw jacker better. it works well on light biting fish when it is set right. I think it was well worth the money.

I use longer rods for a bit more snap, so, was forced to "roll my own".

A longer rod allows slack line between the two eyelets nearest the reel.   (shh, that's a big secret)   

They move off several feet without feeling/sensing any resistance, fully take it, resulting in 100% catch rate.
