zoom feature on vexilar

So I'm going to buy a vexilar, mostly fish trout, want to learn to find walleye and perch.

The perch and walleye in the lake I fish mostly (canyon ferry, Montana) are supposedly in the 40-45 foot of water area.

Do I need the zoom feature?  Ie, can I get along with the 8 instead of the 18?

What depth do u "need" the zoom?

I use zoom whenever the units on....Never cared for the Vex zoom all it does is blow up the image and is only good for the bottom 6 or 12 feet, I prefer mine adjustable to where I need it....In deep water many times eyes suspend 10-20 feet off the bottom....

umm..which vex are you recommending? I liked the price of the 8

Zoom is a nice feature, but not a necessity. I fished for many years without it but wouldn't anymore. You can always upgrade later if you want.

 Honestly I wouldnt recomend a Vex, the others have much better features and a lot lower price tag... For example a Marcum VX-1 will give you sharper crisper lines, similar features to a FL-18 but only $249....

I have only ever used the Vexilar FL8-slt with no zoom and liked it a lot. I never thought I needed a unit with zoom because I really don't need one to go that fast ...
