Ice fishing sun glasses

I am looking for a really good pair of glasses for on the ice. It seems every year my eyes are more sensitive to the glare and I had a couple of bad snow blind days after long days on the ice. I have good sunglasses but they don't cut it. I have been looking at the Julbo Explorers (Fogproof, 100% all spectrums) but they are really pricey...looking for some input. Thanks!

I love my smith photochromic glasses for the ice.  The lens changes as the light intensity does.  There are a bunch of different frame styles that have the polarized photochromic glasses. 

I find them at the discount websites online much cheaper than anywhere else. 

I end up scratching up the cheap glasses and end up throwing them out.

I have costa del mars with the 580 amber/blue mirror glass lense and I love them, I bought them for being out on the lobster boat all the time but they are great on the ice.

I use the same glasses that I use for open water fishing...mine are prescription though, and are polarized.

I have a pair of Natives with interchangeable lenses - for the ice, I put in the blue reflex lens and they cut the glare very well.  They're a bit expensive (around $150) but they also come with several different lenses so you're really getting more than a single pair of glasses.

Also, if you're like me and don't care what you look like on those cold days, ski goggles work great.  Cut down glare, don't fog and if you're wearing a mask you barely have any skin exposed on those brutal days, which has been much appreciated not having a shack until now.  You can get a pretty good pair for around $30-40.

I agree with the cheapest you can get by with as well. I once lost a pair of hundred plus dollar shades while fishing. Made that trip all the more costly.

I am torn over goggles vs shades but I like something less bulky . I bought a pair of cheap walmart goggles and they fog. I tend to sweat easily even on the coldest days so fogging is a problem then I don't wear them

I wear my summer glasses to, Ocean Waves or H30's  dont skinp on glasses cheap ones just give you a headach good ones you don't even know your wearing.

I'm reading astygmatism in those there words. I got it too and driving at night is awful with the headlights becoming 3 times as big as they really are.

As for sunglasses, I found some at Wally World for $5.99 a pair. I bought 1 pair at first, liked them, went back and bought 3 more pair. I love 'em.

As to fogging goggles, you have to learn how to use them to minimize it. I only use mine snowmobiling when I don't wear my full faced helmet. But a cold day on the ice, you may see me wearing them then too. Good ones tho, $30 or more

I bought a pair of cheap ($12.00) from Sportmans Guide that are bi-focals    Best I've ever had for fishing because I can tie knots,read etc.

Shrinkage - I hear you.  I have a pair of Columbia goggles that I got through work but I believe they retail around $40.  Everyone's different but to me once I have them on I barely notice them as they're lighter than my sunglasses.  The better designed goggles have double lens and ventilation around the part you put on your face to prevent fogging - anyone selling these should be able to show you the features.    I also bought my Native sunglasses at Bean's, who will back them up if they don't perform as you expected.

I think you hit it point on though, quality does make a difference.  Whether it's the goggles or sunglasses, I hope whatever you buy works for you.   Good luck!

i paid a lot fo my julbo glasses, they are probably over 20 years old now and i still use them. i have the old heavy round lense with leather side shields, they look similar to the sherpas but are definitely heavier. for ice fishing looking down the hole the wraparound ear pieces are a plus. i would buy the explorers now, lenses do look better. i go blind as well, everything turns black and white, its bad coming back from all day out in the ocean and you cant see the colors on the channel markers, i only buy good glasses now and hats with big brims

Thanks Fishless, the sherpas style are not too bad, but the explorers are anti fog and 100% all typ UV...it is a lot of moolah for them but you only get 1 pair of eyes. The only problem is there are no retailers around here that sell them so I can not try them on for fit. I can get them online at many many places but it would be nice to try before you buy....

I've got a pair of polarized Natiives I got out of the bargain cave at Cabelas for $25 for nice sunny days.  If it starts blowing like crazy, I've got a pair of nice Oakley goggles that I used to snowboard with.  Depends on the situation

I love my Oakley Radars.  They are the best in the snow.  I have the oakley goggles for skiing too.  I have 2 pairs of radars with interchangeable lenses.  I use the VR28s on sunny days.  The rootbeer polarized for cloud covered days.  The Tungsten Iridium for slightly overcast days.  Sightfishing is awesome with these.  I swear by the Radars.  I found mine on Ebay.  My latest pair are the Pitboss that I'll use for next year's bass tournament fishing.

spend the money on some good ones. you'll be surprised how easy it is to take care of them when you spen 200 bucks on them.

i think i got mine at beans, eastern mountain sports would have them but i think in maine ems is only in portland. anyreal hiking place with winter camping stuff or maybe even a good ski shop but ski shops tend to be pricier than pricey. my old julbos only fogged if my muskrat hat was on and i was working an auger, as soon as i was stationary again i could put them back on
