Hey guys, i'm up in hague at forest bay. i've got some bubblers on either side of a point and i have open water out in the middle f the lake. Is there a general rule of thumb for how far to stay away from open water. obviously i'm not going within 20ft ofthe waters edge but is there a tendency for unsafe ice at 30' 40' 50'? Just wondering.. my first thought is use your head and if it doesn't look cold   and sturdy stay away.

Also, There are long streams that have formed only 15' wide and then frozen over again.  So i see snow covered ice and dark ice where the streams froze over. Is that something i can deem safe? I'm just looking for some old timer help as I'm only 3 years into this and conservative on pushing my limits. Especially when theres lots of open water. Lastly, the ice up here is definitely thicker since last weekend. we're looking at 5-6 inches in the bay between friends pt and forest bay.

THanks.

The only way to tell is if you have a spud bar.  If you don't have one, stay the heck away!

If you consider it a sport to gather your food by drilling through 36 inches of ice and sitting there all day hoping that the food will swim by, you might live in northern New York

The first and hopefully the last time I ever went through the ice was walking where a dock bubbler was eating the ice away.  We had almost 18 inches of ice and had a power failure the day before that obviously shut the bubbler off.  The water skimmed over and we had about 2" of new snow.  I was walking back to shore and decided to take a short cut near the dock where the bubbler was and went in over my head.  I was lucky in that there was a shelve of thick ice that I grabbed onto and hoisted myself out.  My friends said I looked like a Polaris missile coming out of the water onto the ice.  It was near zero, and I turned into Popsicle.   Trust me, don't do that. ;)

Outside of Million Dollar Beach and Hearthstone is anyone willing to give up a public parking spot with access to deep water that is frozen?

I am not looking for a fishing spot just a place to park where it is ok for ice fishermen to park and head out to deep water....   if i am reading properly it seems that the lake has been frozen for a while with the exception of a large chunk of water in the northern part of the northern basin and a large chunk of water in the main lake south of the narrows ....

Is there parking at the Y at silver bay??  I read on another forum that it was safe

any info would be greatly appreciated  ;D

pm me if you prefer

Was wondering how the drag with a sled is with the snow today. I plan on going tomorrow but haven't decided on how far I'm going to walk. Can anyone comment?
