Ice auger rust
« on: Jul 16, 2018, 07:46 PM »
I just picked up a brand new ice auger from somebody that has never been used. The only problem is they left it outside and it has a bunch of rust on the blades. Anybody have any tricks to get the rust off? It's a StrikeMaster Mora

Sorry, didn't see it said blades.

X3 on getting new blades.  They're cheap enough and it doesn't take much to throw off the cut on a blade that's been worked on.  You'll thank us later lol

Clean the blades with emery cloth or equiv. and have them resharpened.

I would just buy new blades to attach or have them professionally sharpened, but that's just me. Hope the nuts/bolts attaching the handle aren't rusty, that's a bigger problem.

Vinegar. Throw 'em in and walk away. It'll eat the rust in fairly short order. If it's heavy you may need to brush a bit. I use a stiff nylon one. When they're done, rinse well in hot water, wipe dry and immediately spritz with some WD-40 to complete the drying and add temporary rust protection. Then have 'em sharpened by a reputable vendor or DIY. It's not too hard if you know what you're doing.

Also, it never hurts to have a spare set of blades sharpened and waiting. I always pack a set along. You never know when you might unexpectedly run into the sand or mud or even worse, a rock. Takes 10 minutes to swap in fresh and you're back in business. Be careful not to cut yourself. They're razor sharp even when they don't cut ice.

To fish or not to fish? That's a stupid question!

Whatever you do, watch your fingers. Auger blades are sharp.

Flinched just thinking about trying to clean the rust off the blades. Good thing during winter it's cold enough to not feel as bad. During the summer  :'(

Now that I see it's a strikemaster mora....those flat shaver blades can be bought cheap. Just go on Amazon and get a new pair
