Fixing a Crack/Hole in Bottom of Portable
« on: Feb 28, 2018, 08:48 AM »
I have an old FT Voyager that developed a hole on the front left bottom. I got it 50.00 and didn't want to invest in hyfax. Anybody fix up the bottom of their portable shack and if so, how'd you go about it?

I'm thinking of trying some Flex Seal to see how that works....Or, this is an excuse for a new Otter!

Flex seal will prolly work but won't last without Hy-fax on the bottom.  Gotta get it off the ground-

Do some Googling on DIY plastic welding.  You can do it quick and dirty with an old soldering iron and an ice cream bucket for material.  That will at least get it sealed up but without some protection it wont last if it's somewhere that rubs when you drag it.
I'm a man, but I can change, If I have to, I guess.

I was thinking of using some thick plastic, some small screws and nuts, then coating with flex seal.

There are a bunch of ideas in the archives. Some look good and some not.

Pop rivets work well. Usually lighter than bolts.

I have repair many a sled with a simple hot glue gun.  It you need to add plastic, I have used kids sled pieces.  The glue gun plastic is as strong as your sled and is unaffected by temperatures less than 20 below.

I've had great results using J-B Weld. Scuff the area on both sides with 60 grit, clean with alcohol , tape off one side and apply. After a couple days apply to the other side. Id build up the bottom side.

If the engineers at the sled manufactures would have done sufficient testing of their products, the wear through problem on the bottom of the sled tubs would have showed up.  They could of changed the roto-mold that forms the tubs so the raised runner areas on the bottom had a thicker section of plastic.   Common engineering sense.

Good engineering actually. Planned obsolescence to a T!

Yes, probably so.  designed to wear out so you have to buy a new one.

I've had a jet sled for 6 years and have taken it out every weekend. No hyfax runners on it, nothing but the bottom of the sled.

The sled bottom has very little wear, absolutely zero holes or cracks. I run it over ice, but mainly snow.

It makes me wonder what you guys are running your sleds over where you're getting holes or have a need for runners.?

 Asphalt, rocks?

The reason most wear out the sleds is because they are overloaded.
With all the weight its like pushing harder on a grinder.

Now if I was to fix one, I would use a black oil bottle. Probably the gallon size. Cut out repair pieces large enough to cover the holes.
Remember the area is still thin even though the hole is a certain size, go past to good stuff.
I have a giant solder iron so it does work very well. Too small will cool off fast and make a mess.
If it not sealed it will leak if sitting in water.
