Title: Tongue River Res.
Post by: cavemancrab on Dec 09, 2010, 05:34 PM
I went up to Tongue River Res. last weekend and have a little report. The ice was 2-4 inches, Caught one walleye and had a few bites. I am planning another trip this weekend. Talked to a few people that were fishing the south end and had a few good crappie and a few 30inch northers.

I fished it yesterday for a few hours.  Ice is around 5 inches and solid.  No one around Rattlesnake Point except 1 vacant permanent shack.  A few groups out on the south end.

Crappies are biting.  Brought some back and have them on the grill now.  Yum Yum.

I fished it Saturday for a couple of hours before and after dark. One pike and one walleye. Also missed a pike on a walleye rig...toothy *****s.
I've heard the crappies are hitting in a few spots.

Any new updates on the fishing and ice conditions. I'm coming home in a week, and am ready to break out the gear.

6+ inches of ice on the south end (Dec 11th). Quite a few people have been running around on quads.
I've only been out once and did OK...but from what I've heard fish are biting where they usually do.

I was up today, and it was slow. . . I see a lot of rigs parked along the south end by the mine.  Are there rules for parking there?  I see signs that say no trespassing on the fence, and I want to make sure it's ok before I park there.

What kind of license do you need to bring an atv over from out of state to be able to drive on the ice?

I could be wrong but as long as you have it licensed in wyoming i don't think you need to license it here

I've always understood that you do not need to license an ATV anywhere unless you plan to use it on public roads.  Off road, on-ice included, you do not need to license it.  No different than taking a horse, bicycle or roller skates out onto the ice.  I could be wrong and in jeopardy of a possible ticket however.

I would like to fish TRR next week. I am a seasoned icefishing angler and would like to target Pike and Walleyes. I have only fished this Reservoir one time, put 3 tipups out with minnows, and landed one 8 lbs. pike. How is the success rate on this lake? Do people do well for numbers and size? I'm planning to spear and run 5 tipups. Any information would be appreciated.  Fishing report to follow.

I thought you were a big Peck fisherman? Anyone who fishes Peck knows all atvs must be street legal and registered with a motorcycle license plate attached to drive on the ice. And as far as driving on forest service land on ice it is considered off road travel and you need an off road sticker.
orv sticker has worked for me peck @ trr

No, I've only been their a few times.  Too far for me to get up there very often.  I do not own any off road vehicles either I've only used other peoples.  I'm not sure if they had stickers or not.  I however am flattered that you were genuinely surprised to learn that I in fact do not know everything.

So it's a classic case of your mind is on vacation but your mouth is working overtime?  ;D

Or your eyes on vacation "not reading very well" but your mind is on overime so you are seeing a word here and a word there but filling in the rest of my sentences yourself.  I bet you do tons of cross word puzzles.

You should get your facts straight before recommending people to violate the laws.

"I have understood"  "I could be wrong"

Wow, I guess if I were the reader rather than the writer I would not have taken that as a recommendation. The writer has simply stated what he "thought" were the case but admitted there was a good chance he could be wrong.  Basically saying "hey, don't take my word for it"

But you are right.  I should really be more careful not to state something which I do not know with 100% certainty as there are some morons out there that could misinterpret.  Thank you for pointing that out to me.

Is that a Peck thing with the Corp of Engineers, or is a plate needed when ice fishing on all reservoirs?

I just went through registering a new ATV and got the off road sticker and the license plate (2 separate registrations and fees).  The county treasurer told me the plate was only needed to operate the ATV on the highway.  For the plate, I had to fill out an application that required me to state that my ATV was in fact street legal with lights, horn, mirrors, etc.

Thing is I just tossed the plate in my truck's cubby hole and haven't ever actually put it on the ATV (I didn't want to drill holes into my shiny new machine).  As I plan to go to Peck next month, do I need to have that plate on my ATV?  Could probably just use some zip ties right?

U got it buddy. It sucks that the mods wouldn't let you use Minnesota_homo as yours.

Settle down brownholer. You suck at paddlefishing.

Ego thing eh? then that's why you see all of those pics of me holding huge fish all over the web...look around, not much to look at bud. And besides I never post my fishing locations, but I do tend to spend most of my time on the north east part of the lake many miles from hell creek...? I don't see other fisherman where I fish, see you out there.

Sorry

Uh.....Dude, MT stands for Montana not Minnesota.  Maybe you are not so good at puzzles after all.  And just maybe if you did have big fish photos posted all over you wouldn't feel the need to cut down other people for their opinions.  It's ok to disagree, people do all the time but there is no need for personal attacks and when you do take a swing at me I'm going to swing right back.  Ego... I thinks so, you are obviously trying to compensate for some kind of shortage whether that's big fish or something more personal.

Go ahead, take another swing...

For those of you that do fish, here are a couple from the weekend that Rezeyes and I hooked up.  Sorry spilled a little coffee on them.  Gonna take the ole man out this weekend and try a little spearing.  Carved and weighted up a decoy last night.  Time for a little paint this evening.  I'm not really sure which day were are headed out but the Mooter Posse is rollin.

Title: Re: Tongue River Res.
Post by: doublehaul on Dec 29, 2010, 02:56 PM
5-15 feet. You got to get pretty good to drop a spear at 15 ft. deep. My buddy tried at 17 1/2 feet in clear water one day. He had a toad come through, but missed. all depends on water clarity and what kind of structure you like to spear. I might not be the one to ask, I've only been like a dozen times. It's one more aspect of ice fishing to obsess about.

Hit TRR today it was slow!  Didn't hear of many people doing any better.  Heard of one 30 inch walleye being caught but that was about it.

I tried TRR for a while until the wind and blowing snow made me decide to go watch football.  Caught some perch.  Quite a few people out, including some brave people driving around with their trucks on the ice.  Made me feel alot better about riding my ATV!

Fishjunkie-

Usually fish minnows on tipups and tiny minnows or maggots  on your jig pole for crappie and perch. I haven't fished it in a few years but rattlesnake point was always good to me.

Any report on the crappie bite at the tongue lately?

Any reports of the minnow/bait vending machine at the marina?  How much do the minnows cost and how big are they?  Are they live minnows?  Are there maggots or waxies?  Any info is appreciated.
Title: mealworms & crawlers?
Post by: eyewinder on Jan 13, 2011, 10:43 AM
I believe there are meal worms and nightcrawlers, but no waxworms--at least that's what I think I saw while peering through the glass with my aged eyes.

I saw meal worms and crawlers in the machine.  We got a container full of minnows and they were very lively to my surprise.  They actually gave us 16 or so instead of a dozen which was nice.  They are just your average fatheads as far as size goes.  Its certainly better than no minnows at all!

OK- you guys are saying there is a vending machine at TRR that dispenses live minnows? Are you messing with us? I've seen one up here in Helena for worms, but minnows?

That's awesome technology there! Ever here of it being empty? Would kinda suck to get there and have no minnows but if it's well stocked I may have to make a run soon. I should anyways I guess.

There was an article in the Billings Gazette regarding this.  I will try to post the link below, but if it doesn't work due to my incompetence, the article was in the Outdoors section on 12/16/2010.  Search the BG archives.

Had to tweak the url, but got to the article. That's a great idea and I'm glad he did it, sounds like he restocks every other day.

You should get your facts straight before recommending people to violate the laws.

Thanks for the laugh, this sh!ts epic.Coming from a guy like you who goes out with his buddies on peck and uses triple the legal amount of tip ups and then has the balls to enter the pike on this site as some sort of fishing success story.

Gamedog...Maybe you should invite Sledder. :o

Good luck.

We've already lost a lot of good posting members on the Montana side from this same sort of c*ap you are spewing. If GD is doing something illegal, report him; however, I guarantee you will have nothing to report.

+1.

I think Sledder and D_Flack are co-champions for the most classless posts.

Sledder, if you know there is a violation taking place, make the phone call, not slander someone on a public forum.   Not making the call sure puts your credibility in question.

And I don't know either of you FWIW.

And now back to the regularly scheduled fishing reports..........

Pretty sad when you ban somebody for telling the truth.I've read the comments from sledder and flack and they've been spot on.

I've been fishing peck since the 1970's,it's no secret that most people ice fishing break the rules on peck. Calling a game warden is useless. The area is too big and wardens aren't interested in going out and driving 50 miles on the ice to catch someone like gamedog or his ilk running 30 or 40 tip ups per person,on every point trying to poach as many pre spawn females as they can.

The best thing to do is just throw the illegal tip ups in the hole.

Post by: RMK on Jan 15, 2011, 09:32 PM
I've been checked by wardens also and it's always at the ramp and never in winter.

It is a lame excuse not to patrol just because conditions are difficult.

I can understand why the locals don't like having the truth spoken of their ice fishing methods.
