Hey ice fishing people if you have or know of any full sized shack or portable shanty plans you'd like to share please post them here.
-
CHEAP!!! hey Guys Im new here and its great to find people alike, Now to the point i can help you make a inexpensive shack, #1 1 large tarp
#2 3 8x6 sheets of partical board
#3 4 3ft bungee cords
#4 4 2x4s 8ft
#5 2 2x4s 6ft
#6 30 5" nails
Put all together in U shape with nails and 2x4s, throw the tarp over the roof and the front opening, use the bungee cords to hold down the tarp to the frame and you are out of the elements. Its cheap and not very portable but it works and believe it or not but in canada here i have seen worse and cheaper. Hope i could help any body short on doe for a quick shack. keep it fresh clysdale

I recommend the fishontario site. I built one using their plans and with a few changes it is a palace on the ice. A little heavy but does the job. cost was around $100.00.

How much does it weight? And how many inches of ice should i wait for till i bring it out on the ice?
Chris :'(
-
i would say the weight is around 90 lbs. as far as ice thickness that is totally up to you. a good gauge is to see what the locals are doing and take it from there.

I built the hut from the fishontario site. I made a few changes but used the basic design. It works great for two people. I pull it behind my atv and when it's time to go home I fold it down and slide it in the box of my truck and park the atv right on top of it.
-
I agree higgsy. I built the same one and modified it for my own standards. I leave it in northern Wisc. by my travel trailer and when I go in the winter, it is there and ready to use.

Here are some pics of the shanty that my brother in law made. Sorry for the scanned quaility, but you get the idea.

thats a sweet rig!!looks like a first quality job.
-
Hey Out4Trout..... Nice rig!!! Do you have plans for that? If so I'd like to buy a set from you if your willing.
-
Trying to keep holes open overnight. Has anyone heard about putting a 12 volt light bulb in an openended
pickle bucket with an insulated lid? Do they make something that goes into the hole and prevents freezing
other than anti-freeze.

I don't have any plans, nor did my brother-in-law. He just built as he went. He used a light gage tube for a frame and plywood for the lower half. The seats fold up and lock into place with spring snaps. The poles are 1/2" conduit - all color coded so they attach in the same location each time. He had the cover made locally. He had some "T" shaped aluminum that he used for skis. There's a table that folds out, and a shelf that hangs off from the conduit poles. Propane connections all built in. He did a great job building it. I'll try to get some better pictures of it this year and will post them here.

i saw this icefisherman pulling a 4x6 sheet of plywood out on the ice 1 trip. i had to go over and check it out. it actually was 2 sheets hinged in the middle. he had skis on 1 side and made a holder for his pails on the upward side. when he got where he wanted to fish, the 2 buckets and auger came off and he set up the sheets in a triangular shape. he said it breaks the wind better then a square shape.he built a seat out of the extra piece of 4x2 plywood that fit into the 2 bigger sheets. all the wood was 3/4 in. he had the skis mounted on 4x4x6 inch blocks. it looked very light when pulling out and a very inexpensive way for making a portable shanty. total cost you ask? less than 40 $. i didnt see a tarp on it but can imagine one would be easy enough to rig up.
-

This uses 3 pieces of plywood and mounted on skis the same way. All recycled material, too! Cost about $6 for the used piano hinges and maybe $2.50 for the skis.
-
What was the tarp material that your bro-in-law made the top of his shack out of, it looks like its that thick canvas they use on the portables, it looks really warm.

It looks like the tarps painters use for drop cloths. They are inexpensive, and you can find them at most paint stores.
-
How do you actually mount the skis?
Do you epoxy the 4x4x6 blocks onto them first and then screw into the blocks or do you bolt through the skis...seems to me if you bolt though you have problems on the bottoms with things getting hung up, and if you just screw into the top of the skis you could easily pull the screws out...anyway details would be appreciated.
thanks

Collapsible easy-to-transport hut
http://www.fishontario.com/ice-fishing/buildahut/workshophut.html
About 4 years I built a fold-up shanty very similar to the above. Some of the improvements are as follows;
I put 2-2x6's 10 feet long(2" edge down )as runners, under the floor .
I built 3/4 plywood "walls" 10 inches high all around the floor , then hinged the end walls from on top of these . The beauty of 10 inch walls ...it gives you all that room to store most of your stuff . I welded up a 10 in. wide wood-burning stove that tips over flat on the floor (for travel or storage)...stands up for use .
-
Fishkeeper....I was thinking about doing the exact same thing....but more like 24" walls....how heavy is your shanty with the modifications?
-
Fishkeeper....I was thinking about doing the exact same thing....but more like 24" walls....how heavy is your shanty with the modifications?
About a hundred pounds ...but you can tow it around with one finger ...on ice or hard-pack snow .
With a wood burning stove there is no condensation in the shack .
I use a small block and tackle to get it back(fully loaded with gear)up the snowmachine ramp(home-built) onto the half-ton. It's a lot easier than putting it up by hand by your-self .To put it up by hand , I have to unload all my gear first ....ain't as young as I usetawas .
I glued and screwed 10" long triangular corner blocks into each of the four corners of the walls for strength .
I put a tow bar on the front so that I could pull it behind the snowmachine.
The stove pipe is vented out the plywood wall opposite to the door.
I cut the bottoms out of two plastic ice-cream containers(1 gallon) and stuff them into the two 8" fishing holes cut into the 3/4 plywood floor (diagonal corners) ...keeps any cold air out of shack ...plus holes don't freeze up .
-
Here's a few pics. of my rig. Pulls very easy 1 person on the ice even covered with 4 inches of snow. The only time it's tough is when there is 4" of slush and hills are a 2 man job.Between the sled, shanty, and gear it weighs a wopping 250lbs. if not a little more.(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/tuckerdg1970/icefishing011.jpg)(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/tuckerdg1970/icefishing010.jpg)(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/tuckerdg1970/14458267.jpg)
-
Sorry for the size of the pics I forgot to resize.
-
Nice set up you have there tuckerdg . Mine is very similar . I use only one stretcher pole(at the peak)...but then I hafta put up some coat hangers :). I have a small wood-burning stove where the kid is .
I'll see if I can post a picture of it .
-
That would be great. I'd love to see how you have the stove hooked up.I run a small camping grill in mine with the 20# tank out side which adds smo weight when tank is full. How did you run your chimney? This may work for me if it was just 2 of us.
-
A picture would be worth a thousand words ...but seeing as my daughter forgot to bring her digital camera to town , I will attempt to describe a few points .
As stated before, I built a 10" wall around the 4x8 sheet of 3/4" plywood floor(for structural strength and storage when folded for transportation ). On top of the 4' wide end walls I hinged 50" high rounded-top walls. (I don't know why I didn't use 48" high pieces[a 4x8 piece cut in half]...probably 'cause I had 2 pieces that size already). 42 1/2 " from the floor and 12" from the edge of the wall I cut an 8 " square, (using the piece cut out as a hinged and hookable door) for a stove pipe hole . This square hole is covered , from the inside, with a square of tin . In the middle of the tin is a round hole cut larger than the stove pipe passing through it .I press a tin can through this hole and then put the stove pipe through the tin can, so that air circulates around the hot stove pipe, helping to cool it off .(don't want to melt the plastic tarp, 14 or 15 inches away)
Above the stove-pipe door(hinged and hooked to keep out snow when transporting), I screwed a support for one of those locking shelf brackets . A piece of rounded-to-shape light steel was welded to the end of the shelf bracket . A geared hose clamp, pop-riveted to this piece of metal securely holds the 3" stove pipe , even in fairly strong winds . The bracket is removed when transporting the sled .
The down-draft stove I built is 10" wide(including the hinge supports), 16" long and 14 1/2 " high and stands on 5" long legs . I cooked a freshly caught snot-rocket on top of this stove ,but lordy was it hot in there .....PS. ...best tasting jack-fish I ever ate .The 10" wide stove lays flat on floor when sled is packed up .
Hope this helps a bit ....until I can post pics .
-
I'll keep it short , tired. Last year constructed light weight very portable 4x6x8 shack with 2inch roofers insulation ;black both sides , very rigid in the strong Gail's yah ho dar. 7 sheets 4x8 . started by building a base floor, and 2ft high wall portions stood 4x8 material on existing box style floor . clamped with 1/2 x4 inch strips 6ft (4) frt and back .ran she bolts through with hex to tighten . three bolt/ per 6ft snugged corners were all tied in with flashing, and bolted through w/ washers to stop pull through. 2 sets of cross country skis on bracket attached to back wall outer side of course. pulled like a dream. very warm with one lantern vented generously. The entire shanty disassembles and stacks up on rear panel with the skis
-
Frame being built now hope to finish this by next year. Mine will be 5'x7'.
-
Ran across this web site last year and thought I would post it for anyone interested in a LIGHTWEIGHT!!!! house.Size could be reduced, floor , runners added, different wall and roof coverings.

Nice looking shanty. How do you lower it to the ice?
-
dont we fish with tip ups almost exclusively but we will put in a couple rattle wheels i will use 10in pvc and stick that through the floor and fish through that
-
hey mac i have new pics on "my shack is 80% complete
-
Here are pics to one I "built" last winter
http://community.webshots.com/album/296260691eDumEM (http://community.webshots.com/album/296260691eDumEM)
I took a 1972 Apache popup camper, gutted it (kept the bench seats/with pads and cabinets for storage) It will fish 3 easily, and 4 if you know them pretty well.
Not permanent, not dragable, but definitely portable. Will pull with a snowmobile or 4 wheeler
Unfortunately, I am a big guy (thus the name) and the layout isn't exactly what I want, so I am going to sell it, get another camper, and modify it perfectly for myself (and son and daughter)
-
Big D nice looking shanty. Have a fun time building the next one. Things are always nicer when they are customized. Are you still selling the old one?
-
Here is one I found out of ND.
You have to pay but its dirt cheap and costs less than $100.00 to build depending on where you live and current material prices.
I have seen some people use black visqueen for heat and darkness inside to see down the hole.
http://www.dirtcheapdesign.com/iceshanty/ (http://://www.dirtcheapdesign.com/iceshanty/)
-
This is the design I based mine on.
http://www.blfga.org/blfga/shanty/shanti.html (http://www.blfga.org/blfga/shanty/shanti.html)
I used the FishOntario style ends though (arched top instead of gabled). It weighs approx. 75 lbs and folds up really compact.
A little hard for one guy to set up though compared to the FishOntario style.
-
As promised , many moons ago :-[ , here is a picture of my old portable(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c329/Keepa/122_2226.jpg)
-
I've retired it...but still have it in the woodshed . I'll snap a few interior pictures tomorrow .
-
I'll try again :-[(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c329/Keepa/Sept2106078.jpg)
I have one spreader bar on top to hold the front and back walls apart and tighten up the tarp .
Notice the 10 inch (pony)walls all around the plywood floor ...when the end walls are folded in there is quite a bit of space underneath to store all(most) of your gear.
There are only two jigging holes in the shack, on opposite diagonal corners...you can see one near the door .
With the little wood stove in there it was quite comfy....not very roomy, especially if one has company, but nice .
It was heavy but with the help of a block and tackle could easily load it myself
-
I'll try again (http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c329/Keepa/Sept2106077-1.jpg)
I hope this helps .
-
what is the thinnest ice some one put there shanty on
I would guess it would depend on the weight of the shanty, the weight of the gear, and the weight of the people who would be using it.....
-

2 1/2 linches.

I'm going to start a thread when I start to build my new shack. Hopefully, I will have pictures of the plan that I made on Excel and step by step pictures of the building process. I don't think people should have to pay for plans and information like this.
-
i was thinking of putting some kind of floatation in under or around my shanty. anybody here of this, or know if there is a tread on it?
-
Hav you got the plans for the stove?

 Good idea!!! I have done extensive searching on the web for shack plans and after hours of searching, have always come up with the same 2 or 3 sets that are offered up for free. Although they were all good plans, it would be nice to be able to have a little more than 2 or 3 good ideas to chose from. Can't wait to see the end result. Good luck!!!
-
I finished my shack a couple of weeks ago. I modified a couple of things on my plans, so I will have to edit them a bit. I should have pics and plans done by the end of this week. I'm trying to balance studying for the GRE, work, and my obsession for ice fishing.

2) plan your fishing trips around mid-terms and finals
Thats funny you mentioned this because I went to Little Bay De Noc the day after finals last year. Seriously, thanks for the advice. Only two more years and I can get a job of my dreams.

What job out there pays you to ice fish that you need to go to graduate school for?

Hey yall,..Im new to this site and new to ohio where hopefully I will get a chance to fish on the ice if we ever get any. Ive looked through a few plans on here to make an ice shanty/shelter but most seem really heavy and if I get a chance to fish on the ice...its in ohio so its not really good ice. I had an idea to make one and thought I'd see what those of you with experience think of it. I thought of taking a piece of plywood maybe 4' by 5' and attaching bent metal ( small guage ) electric conduit in the shape of an arch. One on each side and fastened at each corner with a bolt somehow so they fold up and down flat when not in use. When folded upward the 2 arches can be connected making a pointy dome shap at the top. I have a huge roll of some type of material that is an underlayment for some type of flooring wich I can attach to the frame somehow. Im thinking this would be light and easily transportable on a regular sled. Im trying to use materials I already have. Any thoughts anybody? Thanks

Hey good luck gettin some ice, you can buy a popup blind at a sporting goods store for about 30-40 bucks they setup fast and will block the wind all you would have to make is a floor or buy a popup style like a trap. later.

nice rig

I am currently making a house from plans I got from Gordons Landscaping, except I am not making the trailer this year but the shack with skids I created. I built my own fishtrap 10 years ago , copied the commercial version, made a wood sled with tapered front end , copper tubing for the frame, and some canvas from an old tent.
No plans but i can email some pics if anyone interested

sides, rear are 3/4 pine boards
bottom is made of 3/8 plywood curled up around the wood at the front
nailed and glued
..rip the plywood 1/2 thru every inch or so so that it will bend
i made some comparments side to side using pine boards on the inside..also a built in seat
you can glass the bottom if you want
i put 1 inch wooden rails on bottom...and covered them on the bottom with a thin carpet strip like of metal on each one..to keep from wearing out
this sled pulls easier than my fishtrap
frame is copper tubing
tent is canvas like from surplus store.......i found some drop cloths at harbor frieght that are simmilar weight you could use them for canvas
my wife sewed the canvas..we stretched it over the frame and marked with chalk..made some loops fro the pipes to go thru
bolts thru the copper pipe...rubber washers between rows of pipes
tie wraps hold on the bottom of canvas
cut a pole with v notch each end to strecth the canvas tight on top inside between top pipes

Laugh at the barbie tackle box if you wish but on the news awhile back there was a guy that caught a record fish on a barbie fishing pole
all 2 ½ feet of it — to reel in a new state record channel catfish that measured 2 inches longer than the fishing pole.
Hayes landed the record-breaking fish, which weighed 21 pounds, 1 ounce, on Aug. 5 from a private pond in Wilkes County while fishing with his granddaughter Alyssa, 3.

Yeah, and after he got his granddaughter to quit crying because he had snatched the pole out of her hands to land that biggie himself...they got the picture.

Try using a piece of styrofoam cut to fit tight in the hole or even a piece of cardboard will keep it from freezing you might have slush depending on how cold it gets.

New Ice Shanty Plans web site. http://www.shantypods.com (http://www.shantypods.com)
-
Just ordered the shantypods.com
plans I ordered the small one
has anyone put these together
the plans look great and could be
the ticket for me. Want to set one up for the season and always wanted a hard
side. Ill still use my flip up for trips to various places
but like the Idea of showing up with my rods and an auger
and fishing. I will not leave anything in the shack except maybe a heater
Does anyone have a picture of a shantypods.com shack or any
feed back on them. Do they warp and are hard to put up every year
What do they use for siding on the outside
how much do they weigh.
will they stand the wind
can I pull one of the small ones onto the ice or pull the panels
or will I need a 4 wheeler or snowmobile.
If I could get the parts in place by hand with one or two trips
that would be fine with me. I dont want to drive out and dont
have a 4 wheeler

I think ShantyPODS is pretty new on the scene but looks like a winner. You may be one of the pioneers for this one. I'll be interested in how it goes for you, keep us posted on the construction and use this season.

Hi woodfolks, did your plans show up? What kind of a project does this look like?

plans showed up
nice cd on assembly
full sized three pages of plans
we are going to get a close look this
week and start on the next week
You use a floor, panels for the side walls (posts fit into a slot in the floor)
then a box roof that lays on top. The sides attach with lag bolts on the ice
I just want to make sure the roof will stay on in a wind
may need to add tie down straps to hold it in place
they said bungee cords would also work
The plans look realy good
-
Cant wait to see how this goes together, please keep us updated, thanks.

How's the build going on your new shanty woodfolks?

I like the plans
but we want to go with something lighter
Still looking them over
I Just think it will be to much to pull
with out a wheeler or sled

My plans for an 8'x8' hut with a 6'-8' roof that folds down to 4x8'x7.5'' sections for easy storage and transport.
-All plans are in a PDF format
-All angles to cut on the wood are 14deg
-Uses 36-2x4x8' 10- 4x8'x1/4'' OSB/Plywood 2- 4x8'x7/16'' OSB/Plywood 12- Hinges 28- 4'' cariage bolts 24- 4'1/2'' cariage bolts and x amount of screws
-The package includes DETAILED dimensions of the pieces and dimensions of the peices in the assembly
-Also I'm including an excel spreadsheet that has all of the parts needed, and how to cut the parts as to make most efficient use of the wood
-Total cost of parts is roughly about $150 here in Canada.

Looks heavy
I thought so too
What does it weigh in at?

I built this hut just after christmas. 1/2" plywood floor and end walls.Bought a tarp for the sides and top. Got old skies that are on 12" high runners that are hinged so when pulling the hut its 12" off the ice. when we are ready to set up they fold up and off to the side. Made it to fit my truck bed so tailgate can shut. Its heavy, needs 2 people to unload and load. but pulls not bad by hand. Awesome for me & the kid. Here's some pics of a shelter that I just made.
1/2 inch electrical conduit - $10
Poly tarp - $16
a few hours spent working with my son - PRICELESS!!

what did you use for tarp material?
-
what did you use for tarp material?
Got a tarp from home depot. silver was see through-blue was cheep- brown seem to be not bad so we went with that. Cost more but I think it was worth it. Worked well all season. With the end walls wood I was able to make 2 shelves that fold up when it folds down. Spot to hang a 4 pole rod holder. Put the aqua-vu on 1 shelf and spikes,(bait) mt. dew etc. on the other. Needs a stereo tho! Measure your truck and - at least 1" so it slides in and out easy. Hope this helps.
-
I recommend the fishontario site. I built one using their plans and with a few changes it is a palace on the ice. A little heavy but does the job. cost was around $100.00.
Yeah I bought the plans. I bought the lumber and hardware, then found a great used portable in great shape. I used up the lumber else where, and sooner or later will used up the hardware and stuff. It may have cost around $100 bucks when the plans were first made, BUT prices have gone up since then. It does seem like a nice roomy shack. A bit heavy, that is only a problem getting it to, and from the lake. If you pull it around with a ATV, snowmobile, car/truck, even by hand unless there is a lot of snow, it shouldn't be that bad.
That ATV one built by "EMCS retired " excites me too! I just might take a shot at that.

I built one like this back in high school. 4' x 8' 6.5' tall. I used a black heavy duty plastic tarp helps heat it up when the suns out. The only thing is that i just have 2 x 4 runners and they dont pull very nice thru 12" of snow. I like the fold out skis idea! Two years ago i made a rigid hitch that mounts to the front (using scraps from the wheelhouse) so I can pull with the wheeler. I've been using it every year for the last 15 years. Only had to replace the floor once, the original OSB floor only lasted about 5 years. I agree it does get very heavy! My back isn't getting any younger. :o so this year i'm looking into getting my own cube style for a portable. At least until it's thick enough for the wheelhouse. ;D
-
Chevy 94 , I picked up a used 1 man clam so it will make it a lot nicer when I go myself. For some reason skis make a completely different beast when it comes to pulling the hut. I pull by hand so after the skis were put on it pulled so much better we were able to go a lot farther out. Screw a pair to your 2x4 runners and see it it helps. As for the clam- I put skis on it also ;)
-
I used a Clam Jr. for years, still have it. It's a little small for a fat guy, but did the job again last year. I got the Shapell Minuteman used, and in excellent condition for $50 ;D ;D ;D Looking forward to going at it this year. Anything that gets you out of the wind, keeps you warm, is a good one.

I am starting to build one this weekend. I am using a raised aluminum pick up truck cap. i beleive it measures 5ft 10" wide by 6ft 10" long. has windows all around. i am going to use bed frame rails and weld up frame and 2 x 3 to build frame for walls and skin in light metal siding. i have 4 old snowmobile skis to mount so i can pull with my atv or sled to go fishing. I have a killzone pop out shanty now and its great but it takes to long to set up and get all set up. with this i can go out and if i want to move i just start up my sled and move. cant wait for ice.

May I suggest for a real light skin metal you check out your local News Paper. They use light weight aluminum sheets to print the paper. You can pick up the used stuff really cheap. I helped a friend build one out of this stuff. We lined it with two inch foam sheet insulation. It was the fore-runner of todays portable. We put it out, and the next day we had to run around the lake to find it. It was so light that even with a heavy duty wood floor, it needed to be anchored. ;D Oh yeah we framed it with 2x2's and stapled our "siding" to it. Held up for years, then sold it off when my friend died.
-
Picked up one of the old Cabelas tent shanties - the "build your own floor" kind... finally getting it close to done.
Gonna build a rack for my Jet Sled to hold it, so I don't have to carry it...

That's almost identical to the Shapell Minuteman I picked up. Even the floor. The guy must have trashed the original plastic floor, and built a wooden one.
I was smiling like you when I got mine too. ;D ;D ;D
By the way Shapell has a set of collapsable skies that would work just ducky on that, you might want to check it out.

I bought a minuteman over 20 years ago and it came with a plywood floor. Chip board even. I sealed it with water repellent and still have it in mint condition. Its been a awesome hut for a lot of good times.
-
Heck maybe it is the original floor. It's made out of chip board. I just slapped some fresh black paint on the floor (both sides) to keep the moisture out.

I have a old snowmobile trailer 6x8.5 Is it worth the money to build a shack on it? I wonder if it is big enough also if it is stupid because it doesnt lower to the ice. Also if i do is 5 gallon buckets good to stick through the holes to the ice?

id kill to have a trailer like that to build a shanty off of..........to answer your other question about using 5 gal buckets for hole sleeves, ya sure can do that..........would work great
6x8 shanty is about perfect for 3 people to fish out of with lots of room for equipment yet......if ya wanna get real extravagant, ya can even make a couple of fold down bunks for sleeping on in it even
-
I have a tarp/plywood shanty now i am looking to upgrade. i cant decide if I should build or buy a cargo trailer and convert.
-
I'm planning on building a semi perminate shack i bought some plans from fishhouseplans.com i wanted a drop down shack. It should be getting underway in a few weeks. 8x14' with bunks for the weekend trips.

Re: collapsible skies. Our lake was so rough I tore the skies out from under-neath. I just put it a top my Husky sled (Like and Otter) strapped it down with bungee cords and away I go.

i based mine off of my slant roof chicken shack, used particle board for all three walls and floor and used luon for front wall and a picket fence cut to size for door, used metal square pockets drilled to side of 2 by 4 floor on out side then fastened 2 by 2 scabs on each wall the scabs fit in side metal pockets for xtra support fabricated each wall seperate and used 2 by 2s for studs 2 fett on center. used tin 4 roof with plastic corigated roofing in middle for light. the roof is 2 inces over 8 feet so it slides over top of all four walls and just screw it to the walls, i have put it up and taken it down in my barn seems to work so far taking to the lake tuesday i will give update. oh ya also scabd 2 by 6 on each side of floor for runners.cut at 22 for snow

any other ideas for building a large , light permanant shack??

i got a pop up someone here told me to stud it with steel skin it with corrugated fiberglass sounds like what i'm gonna do make the back hinged like a ramp use it to hall a sled there get to the lake, back the sled out and haul it out with the sled

I have one as well! Works great! I left in the dinette, cabinets, furnace, stove......it make those long weekend trips VERY comfortable!
-
About a hundred pounds ...but you can tow it around with one finger ...on ice or hard-pack snow .

How does this style hold up in wind? I'm looking at building one like this but being able to have it somewhat quiet in the wind and not having the side cave in on me either
-
It worked out great. I have 1 bar that holds the 2 ends apart thus making the sides taunt. Warm, easy to heat. I made a small fold up shelf for the back wall. ONLY draw back is the weight. 2 people can handle it with no problem but buy your self- forget it. I stacked on top of it when folded up everything you can think of and had no problems all on a Smitty sled base. Honesty it held up better than my clam flip over
-
Yeah im plannin on building one like this and put it on some kind of sled so I can pull it around easily
-
I just finished my shack, it is 8x24 with 5 holes. It is solar powered and is hauled with a scissor trailer, The nice thing is if it breaks through the ice i can come back in the spring and get it lol Here is a couple of picture

The link did not work. Does anyone have a picture or built one. ? Is it just s Ontario hut?
-
Nice set up.................... ..looks comfortable too.
-
Any idea what it weighs? The idea of using a pontoon is GREAT!!
-
I have not weighed it but just the pontoon no motor should have been close to 1400lb acording to my research.
I tried to keep weight down but actually was not terrible worried about it. I figured if it has no motor it saves #300 and i removed motor mount to save another #100. So the 1/4 luan interior weights a little less then the motor did (and is now spread out over boat) and the windows weight about the same as the motor mount. That leaves the wood structure and roof panels. My main goal was will it float and float level. Not that i will use it as a "houseboat" but "if" it does break through i do not want to have to recover it from the bottom. I move this with a single axle older pontoon trailer with a hand crank. It handles it very well now granted i do not intend on taking on the highway as it is 10ft from the water at my pond. I would feel comfortable hauling this on the highway if i had a good dual axel trailer.
-
very nice going
-
I live in a camp trailer, it sort of looks a lot like my livingroom. Nice job!

I looked through all those links, pretty cool.
How many people do you think bought that first issue listed there and actually built a 24 ft. houseboat from the plans listed in there?

Maybe 2

Update: Picture of my "Shanty" during a flood last spring.Had to add some lines to it so it didn't float off. Kinda nice to not have to worry about water damage. Wife and I fished out of it in the flood was great during the rain storms. Has worked great for me, in the summer its a great cabin and the winter great place to watch the game and the tip ups! That guy in the pic is using a Ronco Pocket Fisherman which has not been made in over 30 years. I discount that whole publication based on that one photograph unless there is compelling reason not to. Those guys are just pandering fools - both "to" and "are" types.
-
I probably have that issue of Mother Earth news in a tote in my basement. Note the publication date was 1986, about the right for the pocket fisherman and the fishin magician. Built a wood burning stove and metal brake from their plans, cool down to earth stuff.
-
I just sold my collection of Mother Earth News last month. It was a great magazine in that era. It got so like so many magazines it was more adds than articles.
I think it was Rapalla that put out a rod similar to the one in the photo. I think that my son has the one I had.

We built this baby last year. She's a little top heavy ('cause who puts a standing seam roof on a shack?) But she stays at the one lake and gets pushed on and off to our camp in between uses (if its 60mph winds, rain and warming). Not bad for my first shanty build, if I do say so myself :)
Hope this helps give you ideas, though I wouldn't make that back so high. maybe take it down a foot if you're going to build something similar.

Trying to keep holes open overnight. Has anyone heard about putting a 12 volt light bulb in an openended
pickle bucket with an insulated lid? Do they make something that goes into the hole and prevents freezing
other than anti-freeze.

Does anyone have plans they used for a good permanent ice shack, or know where I can find them? Just moved to NW Wisconsin and looking to start a new adventure.

Over 20 years ago I had come across some plans to build a similar ice shack as this and I built one and loved it. Now it is all rotten and has fallen apart so I built this one from memory. Does anybody remember seeing these plans or a similar shack. I think it was " Popular mechanics" or something like that.

Ya, I can't wait to use it this year. I have Guardianship of my three grandkids since June. The big Shanty will come in handy!
Just noticed I have over 53,000 views!
