Possible trip to willy
« on: Feb 04, 2021, 07:38 PM »
Some buddies and I are intending to take a trip to Willoughby in the morning. Anybody else been out there yet? Not sure what to expect since I've heard it's a hard lake to freeze properly.  Will certainly report any findings, just am a little leery about heading up there since nobody had mentioned any reports of it being safe-ish yet.

It was pretty wild when that guy was driving around the thickest I found was 6" about 150 yards out. First he drove out to his shanty then another car came out to his shanty then he hooked his shanty up and pulled it all the way out in the middle

that's some crazy stuff for sure. But at least we know it should be able to handle some cautious foot traffic  ;D I didn't make it up there today but am planning to head up tomorrow. Doubt we will catch anything grand, but I've always been curious to check the place out.

I hadn't ice fished since I was a kid til this season, I always remember getting nice lakers at willoughby though. Only gone there that one time this season with no luck. I'm also going there tomorrow but I don't think I'm gonna go from the access, good luck to you!

My buddy's first nice fish through the ice. 20.5" 4.13 lbs. We've put in a lot of time this year and it was awesome to see it finally pay off for him!

Believe it or not that's a brown! Trust me it took some convincing to get me to believe it too. We definitely did some yelling when that guy came up he had actually lost one moments before on a different tip up. I'm thinking about trying over near devil's rock if I go out tomorrow.

Brown trout are almost non-existent in Willoughby, and the salmon that are there are pretty much all stocked broodstock. There's just not many good spawning streams feeding into the lake for either species. A few springs ago I caught two salmon in a row from my canoe, casting spoons toward shore. Watched one come up close to the canoe as I was reeling, swipe and miss, so I just jigged it next to the canoe, and it nailed it. Was hilarious. They tend to be about that size. Nice fish, and should be tasty eating!
