Friend just cuts horizontal strips 3/16"-1/4" wide out of a slice for a dropper off a spoon or on a horizontal jig. It works, carrying the stuff simply makes me too hungry ;D

have used bacon in past...probably wouldn't again...too many other baits....pig fat works though, so does chicken fat, turkey skin, venison fat, little birdy intestine...all depends on what you can get your hands on....

I've used cooked bacon fat for perch. A buddy uses it for smelt. Seems to hold on longer than maggots.

Yeah, Peas work well too.  What you do is pour some down the hole and then sprinkle 'em around your hole.  When the Perch come up to grab one off the ice you grab 'em.

laugh all you want, but it works.  my bait shop didn't have waxies in yet, so i scrounged around the kitchen for bait.  I passed up the bacon, but went for the fat from a beef roast i had thawing in the fridge.  I have not bought bait yet, and i've probably been out 15 times or so.  I've also caught a few limits of crappies and perch.  I would say around 200 fish so far on beef fat.  During one of those days, I only rebaited twice.  As long as I have a roast to trim fat off of, i will continue to use it.  I've also out fished guys next to me using red maggots.

Thats old school stuff. There is a lot better bait out there. Use to do that when you had to go get your bait from the road side not a bait store.
Take a kid fishing, they make great pack mules.
Put the big ones back for another day eat the small ones.

When we used to run trotlines we gathered our own bait by using home-built bait traps. 3/4" mesh hardroll fashioned into the minnow traps you see being sold in discount stores, except ours were 4' long and maybe 18-20" wide with funnels built into both ends. A trap door was placed on top about 10"x10" fastened with a small bungee cord. We'd "bait" the trap with pieces of road which was picked up on the way out to a farm pond to run the traps before hitting the river.

been a long, long time since I used road kill for bait of any sort!

You don't grab em... you kick em in the ice hole!

I like eating perch, but I LOVE bacon! I'll use maggots to catch perch and cook with bacon. Win, win situation!
