Minus 10 Pike Day
« on: Jan 17, 2009, 02:59 PM »
Joined a bunch of Shantymen for a day of sub zero pike fishing....pretty active day...I got 2 nice pike...one at 12 lb 1 oz and the other 12 lb 10 oz...both 35 inches....lost two monsters...one right at the hole ready to grab and slit my 100 lb powerpro braid leader like it was thread....same with the other loss....back to steel....Pikekiller got a nice 4.5 lb LM bass and a ton of 20" plus pickerel...Nice day out there...I think Frozen Shiner has some video to post..

12 lb 10 oz...35 inch....pulled up quite a salad with this one

12 lb 1 oz...35 inch

4.5 lb LM

Yeah... I bolted at 2:40pm.  Fishing was dying down and the drinking was picking up.  Not a good combo when you have to travel 60 miles

Looks like a nice day out guys. I can't fish this weekend because of next weekend. So I am putting new lube in the traps and getting stuff ready.
If fishing was work I'd never be sick!

Nice batch of gator pics.  Congrats. 8)

lost two monsters...one right at the hole ready to grab and slit my 100 lb powerpro braid leader like it was thread....same with the other loss....back to steel

I've seen that lots too even with small snot rockets.........braide d line doesn't make a good pike leader.........go back and get revenge on those big ones with a real leader.  8)

I've been using 100lb flourocarbon this winter.  I gave it a good test this summer at a fly-in lodge I guided at for big pike, and I liked it enough to try it this winter.  I use the triple fish "muskie" flouro, and make my own leaders, and quickstrikes.  Plus with the flouro its supposed to be invisible.  So far this winter I've landed 2 38"s, a 39", 40", 42", and a 45", and a few smaller ones, all on the flouro, with only minor abrasion on the leaders.  Its stiff stuff and you have to use a uni knot to tie it.

True, but the presentation isn't as good with steel.
