Title: coffee table hinges
Post by: Papa Sly on Jul 06, 2021, 03:25 PM
has anyone put these hinges on their sled so on ice you can put down and in snow you can raise? works like a smitty sled but I need a link to which ones have been used and are strong enough to support weight of sled when raised up.   tia   Mike

I use these:

They hinges are the most solid coffee table style.  I only use the springs, not the gas cylinders, so I can't comment on those in cold temps.

I have a set on an Eskimo Evo1IT and have purchased 4 for my new Clam Nanook Thermal and have skis for all.  One thing I noticed with my EVO is that in the up position they aren't as stable, but I don't have a good backer metal plate on the inside.
I've been trying to get some guys to reply on YouTube about how they've done theirs, but no replies.
On my Nanook, I'm planning on at least a 2 inch aluminum plate on inside that may go 2 feet to each lift for dinner strength.   Again, I'd love to hear how others have strengthened these lift braces.
On my Evo last winter when coffee table brackets are in up position, the whole ski can bend and really flex the plastic sled.  I'm not fond of that.... When skis are down, all is well in the world
...
Papa, I can send pics of my Evo, but won't start the Nanook xl thermal till after this year...I'm not giving up on the idea as it's fabulous and will probably always incorporate something similar as the skis mimic the Smitty sled...

Papa,
I don't have pics at the moment, but these two videos below are very similar to what you'd need to do.  I think an aluminum plate on the backside of the hinges is better for stability, and when I fix up my Nanook, will add maybe at least a 2inch wide aluminum plate (maybe 36 inches long) roughly 3/8 to 1/4 thick....

The guy in the second video installed the hinges backwards.  When you lower the hinges, have the sled fall forward, not backwards.  The change of direction helps put less "stress" on it falling down when pulling.  Also put the tow rope on the skis and not the sled....
