Title: Tip Up Line
Post by: Fish On69 on Feb 07, 2011, 01:19 PM
I was just wondering what pound fishing line everyone uses for their tipups. I had a pickeral break me off this weekend during a derby so I was just curious. I'm mostly interested in tipups for pickeral, bass, crappie and perch. I use either 4-6lb line for my leader because I did not want to scare away any finicky perch and crappie. However, I do not want to be breaking off a lot of pickeral.
Any advice for these species as well as other would be very useful...
Thanks,
Dave

Well, you may have your lines crossed here, so to speak. Any of the the stink log types have the teeth to break a mono/fluoro leader of as much as 10 lbs, perhaps more, but the bass, perch and crappies can be caught on light leaders, 4-6 pound is probably a good choice for them. You need to match the leader to the target fish, the toothy guys will bust off without steel leaders or relatively heavy mono/fluoro leaders.

I lost 3 hooks using 6lb test n my buddy also had 3 breakoffs on fresh 10 fireline.  Its gonna happen.
