Using Riding Mower on the Ice
« on: Jan 18, 2019, 09:09 AM »
Is it legal to take a riding mower out on the ice to tow a sled?  With chains I think it would be a cheaper alternative to an ATV or snowmobile.  I know you have to register and insure ATVs and snowmobiles but I don't think it's possible to register a lawn mower.  Maybe just throw an SMV triangle on it?

I don’t think so. Ny state sees the lakes as part of the trail systems. You need to have a registration and insurance to be on the trail system with a motorized vehicle

I see side by sides on the ice all the time... they are an unregisterable (is that even a word?) vehicle

Just because you see them doesn’t mean they are legal . On Some lakes officers are cool and only target people causing issues. Other lakes they set up shop and Wright tickets for everything. It would be cheaper to find a used atv then it would be to pay 2 tickets lol.

With the way the ice is now it's probably easier to just walk. After the snow a lawnmower will be useless. It will however be fun to watch so let me know where you go so I can watch the unloading from truck bed.

Just got off the phone with my local DEC officer and according to him, and the region 7 office, side by sides are legal to operate on the ice, so I suspect a lawn mower would also be fine.

You can get insurance on a side by side. I don’t think you can on a mower. Run it and let us know the outcome lol

Thanks for all of the input.  I will put some chains on it and see how much snow it will handle.

I would run some v bar chains from tractor supply and give it a shot when the snow isn’t too deep it should work out fine.

Down sides would be deeper snow, slush beds, pressure cracks and rough entry/exit points.

Before my dad and I got atv's we had to use the riding mower for other jobs around the cabin. Of course ours is a craftsman with the removable deck so you gain a little clearance by dropping the mower deck. We used it for hauling deer put of the woods, and hauling trailer loads of dirt from a gravel pit back to our cabin. Never took it on ice but with chains I don't see why it wouldn't work up to a point.

Years a go I witnessed a guy come out of Bernards Bay standing in sled and being towed by a rear tines rototiller.
Didn't move fast but it worked!

Don't see why not just remove the mowing deck to give more towing capacities..

Used a golf cart once at an NAIFC tournament. Nothing fancy...no lift, chains, racks or baskets. Local news reporter talked to us a little about it out on the ice...she named us Team Caddyshack.  ;D

One town over was a guy who got a DUI on his laz-y-boy recliner that he put an engine in. He drove it from home to the bar and got caught. The police auctioned the recliner off on ebay lol.

In Montana we can license 4 wheelers and side x sides to be street legal. As for the lawn mower, I am in, I have a 1972 Cub cadet with a solid cast iron rear axle, disc breaks and a true hydrostatic drive. Put on the snow blower and some chains and head out.
