Can't wait
« on: May 25, 2010, 12:44 PM »
Am I the only one who's realized they prefer ice fishing to the open water, and is actually looking forward to the cold temps?

What's on your To Buy lists for this year coming up?

-Gas auger  (no idea which one)
-portable 1-man shack
-Bowler trailer (already purchased to convert to an permanent shack)
-new camera (cabelas one bit the dust in under 3 weeks...)
-Some REAL cold weather gear (not just odds and ends pieced together)

Definately some light weight cold weather bibs and a jacket, need a new minnow pail as well, are there any good battery operated models that last a good long time?

I don't have a boat I hate bugs when on shore. I have my sleigh ice cube 6 and 8 inch auger for less then 12" and my jiffy for thicker tip ups with alarms underwater camera and winter is the only time I get puke over 10 lbs. Last year my 2 best were 43.75 and 39.5incher.
Ya I love and miss the ice.  And normally I'm the dumb a$$ out there on 3 " with icepicks and a life jacket

you're not alone!! i have a 8" jiffy auger, which want to upgrade to a 10" eskimo auger,(8" is just to small for tobin)i have a koender's shack which i was leaving out on the lake, but i now have a line on a small camper to convert over to a shack and hopefully with it will be able to spend the night out on the flats, also need to get a camera, also looking at a cabela's cam. i like the cold better.....no BUGS...!!!!!!! on these hot days i wish it was -20 with me sitting out on the lake with a whiskey in hand out on the lake...i don't have a boat, so winter is when i get out more...the only thing i can say about summer fishing is that depending on the lake you are out at the scenery on the boat next to you can be nice at times... ;D

What happened to your camera?  The thing seemed like a real beauty.

It was for the 3 weeks I had it. The picture was clearer and sharper than anybody else's camera I've ever seen, but the camera started getting water in it, and it was all downhill from there...

Sent into cabelas for a full refund. They gave me my money back, but said it wasn't intended as an "ice fishing" camera because of the cold temps...

Auger runs like a top, camera and flasher are charged and ready, all my winter gear has been washed, rods/tipups have been stripped of line, tackle box has been organized, got some new 35 inch tires for the truck put on and the ice shack is about to get a coat of paint then a vinyl wrap printed by my buddy. Im freakin' ready for the ice boys, come on winter! See you all on the lake.

Haven't got any new gear for the winter, but everything I have has been stripped down and rebuilt.  Can't wait to get out on the ice to run and gun for a few fish.
Planning a trip to Reindeer lake in the spring for Lakers and going to hit up Regina Beach in February and March for burbot...and maybe some good size pike.
See you all on the ice!

I need a gas auger, some new tackle and can't decide (nor have knowledge) or what to get...a fish finder or a camera.  Can anyone suggest which is more beneficial and some brands.  I can't see how a camera helps that much because you can only see if a fish swims in front of it where as a fish finder will tell you if there are fish under you and at what depths.  Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Can't wait for the winter.  Everyone at work is swearing at me because I keep asking for snow and cold.

I have a camera and a flasher and ever since I've got the flasher the camera has gotten very little use. It is a handy tool and I do bring it with me on every outing but the flasher is just so much more simple and easy to move hole to hole. I dont typically stay in one spot for very long so the flasher suits my fishing style better for sure. My girlfriend on the other hand LOVES the camera, if she comes out fishing an the camera isnt working shes pissed.. she really seems to get a kick out of seeing the fish come up to her hook. I've got her using the flasher now too which sucks, any time she comes out she wants to use it. I guess its time to buy a second flasher. ;D

Pretty much just a real-time vertical column sonar, much more accurate and powerfull than your average "fish finder".

Hummingbird, vexillar, and marcum all make nice units. I have a hummingbird and have nothing but good things to say about it, I really like the huge bright screen.

the floor is in 2 pieces, one being the skid, then everything else stacks on the skid, 1 floor piece, 4 walls and 2 roof sections.  so in the spring if the ice conditions are real **censored**ty you can haul even one at a time, so you don't have as much weight.  the walls are 1.5 inches thick with painted osb on the outside, and with either, panel board or pine on the inside. the roof is tin, then all u have to do when you get there is screw on the ridge cap.  everything snaps together with small brackets, the shack is set on 2 main beams to make it easier to keep level and jack up.  it will be a good day setting up, and a few days to take down, but spending over a month on the lake is well worth sleeping on a good bed.  the stuff inside will all have to be moved in and out too, which sucks, but getting this 256 square foot beauty off the ice in the spring will not cause me any headaches. i have the walls and roof build now, and am just in the process of painting it now, will put picks on when i get it on the lake.  thinking of videoing the setup to show you guys.

i think i made up my mind with 5/16 pine boards.  it will be a little heavier, but will finish very nice and the moisture wont hurt it as much as panel board.
