Panfish on tip ups -- please tell me your set ups...
« on: Feb 13, 2011, 09:45 AM »
I have been using small trebles with small minnows at 25 and 35 foot depths(right off the bottom).  I have an attractor set up 12" above the hook(spinner blade and holographic beads)-- but I cannot catch a panfish to save my life... I am catching tiny pike--but looking for panfish.  Please tell me how you catch panfish on tip ups.  Thanks MUCH!! ;D

A dry line will never catch a fish.

You may want to make yourself a set of tip downs if you are after pannies.  There is info all over this site on how to make yourself a set of them.

X's 2. Tip downs are way better for panfish. Tipups are a waste of time IMO.

I catch more perch and crappie with my tipups than I do jigging on most trips. The key is the tipup must have a super-sensitive flag trip, a totally free-spinning spool, and the lightest possible leader line, splitshot and hook for the small minnow you are using.

I get very few hit and drops even from notoriously spooky crappie, with my 6# mono leaders, size 10 trebles, and tiny split shots barely big enough to keep a 1-2" minnow down. Other guys that I fish with that have anything beyond what I mentioned, even a spinner blade, get mostly hit and drops.
The Ultimate Warrior is possessed with great power from the heavens above ! Against the mighty lake trout and pike and schools of crappie, the power of the WARRIOR will always ......... PREVAIL !!!

Thanks for the info... what kind of tip ups do you use?  Do you ever put jigs with waxies on instead of a small minnow?

I use a number/8 octapus hook on tip downs with a jumbo fathead or a bass minnow. If your catching the pike, my guess is the pike are scaring your panfish away.
Look at me I can walk on water
