Used to use 1/0 or 2/0 because they were easier to remove without a jaw spreader. Now usually 6 and 4 and it seems to be ok.

you gus dont think the 8's are too small? seems like theres a lot of room to miss if you have it through the back of a large pike minnow

I use a quick strike rig with 6's or 8's.
One barb in bottom of jaw and out the top, the other hook goes behind the dorsal fin, one barb in and out the back.
Have hooked Pike to 20# with this set up without any problems at all.

You can put plenty of pressure to tire really big fish with 6's and 8's. Sometimes a size 4 works better with larger baits though.

Use a circle hook!... my choice would be a 3/0.

1. less damaging to the fish (especially if you C&R)

2. much easier to remove.

3. less likely to hook yourself.

4. virtually snagless.

5. increased catch rate.

I use #4 trebles on my tip-ups & they work great! I very rarely miss a fish w/ them.

PIKE: #6 or #8 trebles rigged on 12, 18, or 27lb stranded wire from Sevenstrand.  WALLEYES:  #12, #10, or #8 trebles -- 8 or 10lb test stranded wire.  The hook size depends on the bait you are using.

The guys that are using huge trebles would have much more luck with smaller trebles.  I read several books this year from Al Lindner, Dave Genz and Doug Stange.  Every book said that people use way larger hooks than they should.

A dry line will never catch a fish.

Dang, do I use small hooks, compared to you guys!  ;D  I've been using two size 10 trebles hooks on 18lb Sevenstrand for years, fishing northerns. I even use them on large bait, one near the snout and one near the dorsal fin. I guess to each his own, eh.

Quick strike, one size 8,one size 6,18 inches of wire. The 8 goes in the forehead the 6 between the dorsal and the tail.I caught a 42 in.20 ish lb pike that had 17 1/2 inches of wire past his beak. That's why I use 18 inch steel leaders.
