Readears Gotta Luv Em
« on: Feb 11, 2018, 08:19 PM »
Caught a nice readear this evening. Probably 9 or 10" didn't have a ruler and I wanted to get her back in the water. Got 10 good gills and a crappie so I didn't want to kill that fish (good brood stock). Ice was in decent shape too! Noble County. Having trouble posting the pic. I'll try later. Hex

Redears have got to be some of the smartest fish I've ever seen (sight fishing)... They are the KINGS of sunfish.. Feel free to keep some, because the biggest, are always still out there. Smallest fish (gill) in the first picture is 7"... I've seen some that pushed 15"...

Once they hit 10" you better be good, or you'll never even know they bit....

I've been on a super tough bite the last couple days on this super clear lake and had it not been for that palm rod in the picture, and my locator I'm not sure I would have caught many if any. Tough,Tough bite. Hex

Redears are the exact reason I use 1lb test leaders...

When sight fishing redear will stare at the lure forever.  If it has any spin they WILL NOT bite it.  Most the time they come in and suck it in and spit it so fast you can't react even when watching them, then if they like what the sampled, they will come back in and suck it in for good.  I have also noticed they like the lure slightly below them at times, especially if they are feeding on snails in the area your fishing.

Awesome catch, and thanks to the contributors, good info, stuff I personally didn't know about redear... I caught a bunch of small ones and the acted like they were nine inch gills this year, may make it a point to try to find water with large numbers of large redear as a test of skill sounds like a challenge

Definitely as light as they were biting! That adjustable and super sensitive strike indicator is the key I think. Hex

It seems were in that time of year where the fish are really tough to catch.  Light lines, super sensitive springs, ice flies, etc... Good job on getting a few to commit.
