Title: RAIN
Post by: BIGDEERHUNTER63 on Dec 19, 2022, 12:39 PM
With the jet stream plunging into the center of the country and PA being on the warm side heavy rain and temp. in the 50s to near 60 on Friday before the cold front comes through any ice will be lost on Friday. Then the high winds on Sat. and Sun .will prevent ice formation even though the temps will be very cold . It will be a month till you can get on the ice .

Weather is crazy and so are the weather reports sometimes.  I'll continue to hold out hope for whatever comes our way. If you guys are venturing out even checking conditions though please remember to have as many safety precautions as possible.  I know I'll be out there checking things out shortly after Christmas if not the day after.

Weather starting to trend in the right direction depends on what station and what website, app etc you look.  I'm not into "good vibes" like the snowflake crowds so lets just hope and pray we are walking on water sooner than later.

I don’t know where you are, but around us (in the Poconos) there is 3-6” of ice on our lakes and about a foot of snow on the ground. That snow will soak up a LOT of rain! Sure, there will be some shoreline issues on those lakes that get a lot of runoff but I’m betting a lot of the lakes will be fine. And no way are we gonna lose 6” of ice!

Temps are supposed to plummet quickly on Friday after the front comes thru- They say some places will see a 60* drop in a matter of hours................ 😳😳😳

I won’t be able to fish until Monday due to family plans, but I am confident I will be on the ice fishing somewhere on 12/26! 😉

Should be some places that fish just after Christmas, may make a trip to Tioga or somewhere higher elevation on the 26th.

My guess is that larger lakes and places fed by larger streams or rivers will take some time to be ready after the rain and warm up, but smaller lakes should lose some junk ice and freeze back up with no problem.

seems like most lakes have ice on them.  Sayers was mostly capped this morning when I drove by this morning.  The nights are going to get really cold and will help the ice formation.  We need to remember, even if they call for the 40's, that only last for few hours.  The majority of the time, the temps are cold and can either form ice or not lose it.  Hoping for the weekend somewhere.  Will definitely be out some where next week.  nez

yup, rained all night pretty hard up here. Thank god it was rain and not snow or we'd have a couple feet of snow on an inch or 2 of ice. Gonna get cold tonight so father winter can start rebuilding the ice!

It was 1° this morning when I woke up. It warmed up pretty fast though... it's just under 4° right now. Making ice but it'll take a little time to build up. I got too much to do now anyway so I won't be checking anything until the day after Christmas.

Nice pic Spider! 😁

Was -1 at the house when I left this morning. Was -5 when I got to the lake. Slow bite but managed a couple medium perch and a nice bluegill. Missed one and had something big on but lost it when it got tangled in the transducer. Icehound got a snot rocket and 2 BIG perch. So a good morning on the ice! 😎

Oh, and it “warmed up” to 1* when I left at 11..........😜

Wider look at radar shows a pretty consistent jet stream coming straight across the North American continent. That means temps in the 40s  and off and on rain for most of PA for quite a while. Should see some really cold nights in the northern part of the state and in some high elevations, so there will likely be some fishable ice at places like Hills Creek (Tioga County) and Black Moshannon (Centre County) that don't have much inflow from streams.

Wow! Some folks give up way too easily! 🙄. We’re barely into January and you are writing off the season already? 🤨

I just checked the reports page and guys were still fishing on several lakes (TODAY)in Tioga County- one report said a dozen guys.

And looking at the forecast towards the end of the month, it looks very good- I’m betting I’ll be back on the ice by Groundhog Day! 😜

I fished 3 different lakes in my area in 4 days after his original prognostication that the RAIN would wash them out........for my finale I drove to Maryland and found well over 8" of ice and caught this stringer of tasty critters!!!! Well thanks for the personal attack . I have been on the ice this year and yes i have killed over 75 deer 3 this year, all on public ground . We fished Rose Valley right before Christmas , but I have been hunting with the bow and flintlock since waiting for it to get cold again . I have been ice fishing a long time since the late 70s , in several states as well as hunting in New York and Virginia .I have a 2021 Lowe Rough neck with a 80 hp. jet for shallow water and a 17.5 Fish Hawk Crestliner with a 140  hp. Suzuki  , a 2020 f150 Lariat , a 2021 Ford Explorer , and another 2004 F150 for a spare truck when the ice season is over I will be fishing from the boats and camping in my 2020 - 30 ft. camper. By the way all I own was paid for with  cash and I have been a student of the weather for 55 years  and yes I had my fat a$$ out of the computer chair today because the wife and I went to York Haven to watch my 2 grandchildren . Good point Spider.  There used to be another defunct site that promoted that.....  We are all outdoor aficionados and should appreciate our common ground regardless of our opinions on the weather.  Glad we don't take our computers onto the ice....well, I guess some do.   Anyway, enjoy the rest of the season.  Maybe we'll see each other out there.  Stop by for a hot sandwich, but get there before Rutt Nutt eats them all.....couldn't resist buddy.
And Spider, we are good to go to the resort once it has safe ice.  Was there last week and it was capped but they won't let you go out with less than 7".  Those monster perch, bass, and crappie await!  I'll keep you posted

For the record Spider, the ice at the resort was fishable by our standards.   They just are overly cautious and won't let anyone on it unless you can drive a cattle hauler out there.  You know...insurance and all....  We definitely need a good cold spell for everyone's sanity.

Once again , like over Christmas a giant cold front is plunging into the United States and will plunge almost to Mexico , then move east and set up over the north east. This will bring 2 to 3 days of very cold air over PA. (FRI. SAT , SUN ) ,then fly right back to the winter weather we have had all month. A statement from Elliott Abrams from Penn State weather said 40 or more years ago  "THAT THE HARSHER THE BLAST THE SHORTER THEY LAST " . I'll use a quote from Don McLean from the song American Pie (" no time left to start again ).

You notice I said there would be a few places at elevation that would have minimal ice.

Belmont Lake--------1949 '
Duck Harbor Lake ------ 1391 '
Hills Creek  ----------1486 '
The average of 5.5 degrees loss per 1000' of elevation , that's why these places hold ice in lean years of cold , it's also why these places are fished out .

Chaumont Bay is the way to go in these trying times.
Joe, did you see my report on Belmont?  I went up there on your advice.  7 inches.  I appreciate you!  Things should be improving this week with the cold nights.

Yes, I saw you're  report.

I'm  seriously thinking about taking a 4 day trip to NY this year.

We did have a great  6 day local season here fishing from dawn to dusk.  At least we had that this year.  Now, we will have to drive an hour or so to get another couple of trips in.

No ice here in Se pa. Put my stuff away. Started the traditional February Gill fishing. Finally found some that were biting.

I'm putting my stuff away tomorrow..I need to keep watch for early bears now.
And start putting my feeders away every night.
Last year We had 8 bear..I
Chased off..My m.p.380
And a huge stainless steel bowl with a huge spoon.
Does a fine job.
