it's a hook with a copper wire wrapped around it, sometimes they have different colors like red, yellow, green.

Andy 1955 a wire worm is basically a hook wrapped with thin coloured wired to give the hook a worm type effect. I would imagine  an egg type hook would give it a good shape  I have a friend who ties flies and he has done some up never tried em but everyone seems to have good luck on here with them.

Kind of like a Brassie without the head?  I've had success through the ice tightlining with Brassies stolen from my flyboxes.  Never heard of a wire worm though.

I've fished wire worms for years and found them deadly for whites and perch. For perch I usually tip it with a maggot but have found that the most important thing is to make sure that you fish them in a horizontal position. You can get them in various colors but the brass, yellow, and red were the best colors for my areas.
