Tipping Guides
« on: Jan 08, 2023, 10:23 AM »
Brother and I booked a 3 night, 2 day Snowbear package on Devil's Lake, ND for next month. Have never gone on a guided fishing trip before. What is a decent daily tip for the guide?

I tip guides same as waitstaff, 20 percent, unless REALLY pretty, then wallet, car keys,n, deed to house.JK. but do 20 %. if guide puts me on exceptional  bite or shares knowledge or is entertaining, then 25-30 %. YMMV. wirenut

I often see this question asked, and also understand the confusion or gray area, so when I started my guide service I decided to not accept any tips.  Hard rule, no exceptions.  Here's your fee, now concentrate on enjoying your trip and not worrying about if you tipped enough or not.

I challenge more guides to do this...

If I'm alone, I'll generally tip $50 to $100 per day, depending on how much effort the guide is putting in.
If we are more than 1 person fishing, we'll generally split $100 daily tip.

I do a bit of guiding in my spare time, about 65% of customers give tips, but rarely over 15%.  Rarely exceeds $50 for a $350 to $400 day, but I'm not expecting tips from anyone, nor do I mention it at all, as some of the American guides I've fished with tend to do.
