South is not bad, a little bit is building up on the bottom of the ramps now. It's getting worse so with another big snowfall they will be hard to get over for low vehicles.

Also today was windy and cold but man the perch were biting today. It was my first day this year where I caught more than 20 perch. Lots of 6-8" and a few 10+. Pike are also big this year! I've had two over 30 in two weeks

I was out on Thursday before it got cold. I manage 3 walleye smaller than any of my perch and about 25 perch. 1 being 10”+ and about 20 of the being under 7” the other few would have been in between. Everything went back for a swimming too.

I was out on Saturday, it was pretty cold but the pike were biting! In 20 FOW, didn't see anything but pike on the sonar. Caught 4, this one and another 2 over 5 lbs.

Could also see the bottom, way clearer than expected!

It seems like the visibility varies quite a bit on the strap. Some spots I can se bottom through my hole at 20 feet, and probably 20ft visiblity on the camera too, but others I get ~3ft. Must be some currents in spots or something.

Anyone know how the south boat launches look right now? I might be going on tomorrow morning. I have a Santa Fe, so its a little lower to the ground than a truck.

Went out for a short morning session. Looks like someone (parks?) Plowed most of the boat launch, but there is still buildup on the bottom of the ramp. They didn't clear the ice at all. My SUV made it over fine but there was some scraping.

It was a super slow day until a flag went off and I pulled up a 38" 13lb jack! Lost my hole cover in the wind and my scoop down the hole, but worth it for her. She had a hook deep so she bled quite a bit, but kicked off strong after a quick picture.

Then I proceeded to bury my SUV in a drift and spent 10 minutes digging it out haha

Merry Christmas!

There are a couple of trucks on the ice off the south launches, but it looked kind of snowy at the bottom to me.  So i walked out nearer to the causeway.  Just started fishing...not much going on so far in18 FOW.

Didn't get to north end today, but after stiking out near causeway, went down the boat launch,.  Probably 20or so trucks on the south half of lake.  You can get through in and out with 4x4 and a bit of a run.  Ruts about a foot+ deep so clearance could be an issue for anything less than 1/2 ton.  Once you get on the ice, pretty clear sailing.

Took the family out for a couple hours later this afternoon. Set up in about 18fow just north of the north boat launch. Access was pretty good, fairly rutted but no issues with a truck. Saw lots of trucks out seemed to be getting around everywhere on the lake. The wind was nasty but my 7 year old managed to ice a nice 31 inch pike on a tip up. Otherwise Didn't see any other action.

Fished for a few hours in front of Shields in about 18fow. Landed a small pike and saw about 12-15 walleye that kept gently stealing our bait. Nothing but the pike really committed.

Tried the north end today. Getting on the lake is a bit rough. You definitely need a truck with some clearance. It seems like there is more snow compared to the south end.
I'm just trying to get another bite.

The bite picked up on the Strap today. I missed the hot morning bite, but the action was steady throughout the afternoon on perch. The size does seem to be down somewhat from last year, but a few good eaters found their way home along with a bonus mid day walleye.
Gorgeous day with the weekend looking pretty nice as well.

Fished the South end today and the perch were very active, with some nice sized keepers.  For anyone going out this weekend, both of the boat launch entrances are very good to get on the ice.  There were a couple SUV's out today, so no problem.  The East side going South or North is easy driving.  The West side has more snow and is a little tough getting around.  The perch were hitting meal worms, and maggots along with perch eyes.  They were in 19 to 23 fow.

Here is the link to this years derby.

https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/blackstrap-ice-fishing-derby-2023-resort-village-of-shields-tickets-509563988607

Looks like they are only paying out for the biggest fish, instead of a prize for each species.  I talked to them last year about having
prize money for each species (spread the money around),  but their committee didn't want to do that.  So I guess myself and others will boycott the derby again this year.

Good Luck to all that enter.

Busy day at the strap, it was absolutely packed today. Looks like all the shacks are not as far out this year because of how hard it is to get around.

We tried farther south this time past the old road shanty town, but it seems the farther south you go, the less bites you get. Anyone know this to be false? We tried a few spots but only saw line perch or shy whitefish.

We moved back up past the old road at 12 and landed a 30" jack and a couple eyes, plus many 8" perch.

The eye was landed on a 10" cisco quick strike rig, but he was only 16" haha

I have been out 3 times this week, and the perch are plentiful, with the morning bite usually the best.  Although one afternoon was on fire.

Been fishing the South side for over a month, not much happening on the North end that I have heard of.  East side is easy to get around on, once you get to the middle of the lake and on the West side it is hard getting around.

Seem to get 2 or 3 perch a day that are over 10, with lot's around 9 to 9 1/2.  Which put meat on the plate, so we can't complain I guess (not like 3 or 4 years ago).

I don't know what you guys have been seeing, but I've been picking up more trash on the ice this year than any other.

Pick up your trash you pigs...

Out again today and the perch bit all day long (I fished from 9:30 to 3).  Again only a couple over 10 inches, but lot's of 8's and 9's, which we can't complain about the way it has been the last couple years.  Only woman would like a couple inches more :)
