Black or White Crappie?
« on: Jan 26, 2006, 09:58 PM »
Hi guys, I was wondering which species grows larger the white or black crappie. What size is considered a monster fish for each species?

Whites are more prominate in the south ,and tend to grow larger. As from what I have read and seen in Crappie Magazine, it is the same.
Here in NY State, we have a 90/10 ratio of Black Crappie to White Crappie, and they are definately consistantley larger.

any 2# crappie up north is a monster, down south a monster is over 4#.some of my crew from va. tell me they release the small 12 inchers down there, lol. i dont target them to often but my largest is only just over 13 inches but it won me a 600$ payoff on black lake in 1994 and yes i still have the proof. it was one of the tagged fish and i took the cash instead of the over priced 1000$ hardware stuff. keep fishing, the next cast might be your monster!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree. I have a lake close by that has both and the white crappies get in the 13 to 14 inch range and I have a hard time getting a black crappie to push 11 inches.  The blacks seem a little fatter even though they are smaller.  The White's also seem to be wider in girth also.

From Crappie USA

Record Crappie Caught on Alabama's Lake Neely Henry
Charles Clark was fishing near the center of Lake Neely Henry, in front of Canoe Creek, when he hauled in this monster. Weighing in at a whopping 4.19 pounds, Clark's catch is the largest crappie ever caught in a professional crappie tournament. Clark reported that he caught the record crappie on 14' B'n'M Rod with a white Charlie Brewer Slider Grub.

WW - to be a Manitoba Master Angler fish, a black crappie needs to be 13"...I don't think we have any whites around here.

The difference between the biggest Black or White crappie is minimal. Whites have it by a very small margin. What any angler needs to concern himself with is: where is the largest Crappie by him, Black or White.

According to my personal record list, by weight:
White Crappie: 5lb 3oz Mississippi, Enid Reservoir 1957
Black Crappie:  5lb 0oz Minnesota, Vermillion River 1940

Do not concern yourself with this.
When fishing here in North NJ, White Crappie will never cross your mind while pulling in 2.5lb Blacks, unless you go south of the Mason Dixon Line, in south Jersey, where Whites rule.
The more I fish, the more I  to fish, but the only  I need is BEER.

On upper red here in MN, alot of guys switched to 10" augers cuz they were knocking too many off on the bottom of the hole.  I heard about a fish that some guy had on that wouldn't fit through a 10" hole.  Can't reach down to 'em cuz the ice is over 3' thick.  I donno if it's true or not, but I do know the dnr netted a 6 lb crap outta there 2 years ago during one of their surveys

I cant remember the last white I cayght, I think I was down in Kansas in open water.  I have seen a 5 lb white that a guy caught on a trot line.  that was one freaky lookin fish man. Nose down in the 5 gal. bucket it touched top and bottom and the tail hung way out over the top. Dont know how long it was we only had a hand scale.  The first year I started ice fishin, I caught a 3# 8 oz. crappie 18 1/4" through a 7 in. hole.  Ice was only about 3" thick  and about the time i didnt think she was gonna fit she stuck her nose in the hole flipped a litle and slid out on the ice.  My buddy and his kid tried to tell me that is was some freaky lookin bass cuz Crappies just dont grow that big.  Well,  Not bein much of a crappie man, I didnt really know what i  had.  I about cleaned it before another buddy called up and suggested I measure and weigh it.  The guy who ran the bait store about freaked out on me and said if I couldnt pay to mount it He would.  Ive never had anything mounted in My life.  But he knew a guy ho got it done for me for only $110 and It looks awesome.

Fishing should be the exercise of your skills- and its rewards the places it brings you to
