Fishing Crappie With Swivel In Line?
« on: Feb 08, 2012, 07:34 PM »
Does anyone use a barrel swivel in line when fishing Crappie?  Does it help keeping the bait from spinning?

When fishing with minnows I always use a swivel.Helps with twisting my line.Found out without the swivel my line would twist and knot up.

I like to run a tiny swivel above any bait being jigged. Alot of times the fish wait for the bait to stop spinning, so the faster it stops, the faster they bite.

Sampo makes some tiny swivel, they're less then an 1/8 of an inch long and they feed in and out of the rod eyes without hanging up ! I've caught Lake Trout over 5 lbs on them with no trouble, they are Rugged !

I tried them and didn't care for them. They design makes them difficult to tie on, and they are large and neutrally boyant which affects the pounding action I often use with small jigs.

I use the smallest Spro barrel swivels I can find on all my jig rods.Stops the jig from spinning and creating line twist. And the go through the guides no problems

??? mentioned swivels, are you guys talking bout a snap swivel, or a barrel swivel tied further up the main line, then tying a leader from swivel to jig

Barrel swivel with a leader to the jig or spoon. I do but not on my straight line combos.

I always use a barrel swivel when crappie fishing, but thats mainly because I use braid as a main line and then attach a florou leader. It does help with the spin as well

i've done extensive testing with barrel swivels and the problem is that if you are fishing for panfish using small panfish jigs, they don't stop them from spinning at all. there just isn't enough weight to keep the bottom loop from spinning with the top.  if you are using small spoons or any larger types of baits, then they work.   just don't think you are going to be able to tie on a swivel and your fiskas is done spinning.  i've tried bb swivels and regular.

Tie directly to lure, but only on the dead stick.

I don't think the mainline (2-4lb mono) has enough strength to hold the top part of the swivel steady and let the bottom part spin. The whole swivel spins. The only way to get them to somewhat work well is to buy a ball bearing swivel in the absolute smallest size made. Brass or steel ones just dont work.

I DO NOT use a swivel on spoons. I want them to spin around some while I'm jigging, it gets that flash going around 360 instead of just one way. Jigs are a different story, I don't want those to spin at all if possible.

I use the Spro #10 barrel swivels and they do keep small jigs of down to 1/64th oz with plastic trailers from spinning around on line when you have to pull it up.  How it works going down, no idea, don't have an uw camera.  With even smaller jigs down to 1/100th oz, well that little swivel is an added weight to help get your tiny jig down.
