crappie spoons
« on: Mar 15, 2011, 04:36 PM »
Watched Ice Fishing Guide today and was wondering what "spoon" if you use, what is your favorite. Color, size and what your favorite "tip it with". Just wondering what the crappie guys on here use as far as spoons. Thanks

I had pretty good luck with a 1/16th oz Slender spoon, or a Northland forage minnow. I tipped it with a spike on each treble.

size two swedish pimple with single hook and tipped with night crawler or spike
Fishing is a sport in which thinking is involved it is the covenant between nature and man, mother and son. Through fishing only can we recreate the link that has been tarnished throughout the existence of the modern era of mankind. Fishing is the answer yet people ignore it and consider it a "stupid" thing to do. What do these people do instead? They stare in front of color changing boxes. Is that life? My life is fishin

Have had pretty good luck with a Frostee tipped with a couple waxies. Color didn't seem to matter too much, but glow chartreuse seemed the better choice.

Forage or Buckshot have worked well for me over the years. Sometimes I tip them and sometimes not.

the smaller slender spoons are a great crappie bait. I usually have one rigged on at all times. they work well tipped with a minnow head

Slender spoons and little cecils, fished plain, or tipped with spikes or waxies depending on fish mood

Smallest forage minnow in either orange or natural silver tipped with spikes on each treble or a minnow head.

I switch out the stock treble for a #14 or #16.

Last season started using halis or shucks lures with good results.

willow spoon, demon jigging spoon (size 8), and the smallest sweedish pimple have been the hot ones for me. Rarely use bait, sometimes I throw a spike on there for scent, but they just smack the spoon if you jig it correctly.

I have used most that have been mentioned (forage spoon, frostee, demon, pimple, kastmaster, etc.) but always find myself going back to the slender spoon.  That aggressive side darting flutter action on the drop is key I think.  Nothin beats jigging that thing 1-2' under the ice and watching a slab dart in and engulf it.  I tip with a minnow head on occasion but seem to have better luck jigging it plain.  I do like the frostees and forage spoons for perch though.

x2  I also have pretty good luck with a pimple tipped with waxies, but I always seem to end up with the chartrueuse Frostee tied on.

Forage minnows, Frostee, Demon ,Pimps,Kastmasters ,Stingers all are good spoons tipped or clean I've taken tons of crappie. They are all heavy spoons 1/20 to 1/16 range for a nice different wiggle try the smallest Slender spoons. They fish really light and put on a show down below,I've taken some giant gills on them also.
