Think it's the best time to go, especially as we were nearing last ice. This time of year is nearly as good, just the ice is a bit spooky near me now. Mid winter is OK, think it has more to do with it being a bit darker of a sky than anything else.

it rained up here on Thursday, I happened to be on a half way decent crappie pond, and yea, they bit...on any given day we'll get a mess of perch mixed in with them, but the craps were up high and hungry...very few perch, mess of good sized craps...quite a few 14" plus...couple that I had to take the tape to at the end of the day...I was suprised...so yea, craps bite in the rain...why not?

I think the rain water running down the holes turns the fish on.
I have also seen snow flurries do the same.

Read an article last year that said a warm, rainy day at the end of the ice season was the best time to catch big crappie. A combination of reasons, with the water running back through the holes and increasing the oxygen level, being the most important. I'd just like one more shot to fish for crappie at this point!

Camo Fish is right on the money! I went out last nite for the crappie bite and only caught one! I usually hammer'em! But last nite the Barometric Pressure was 30.8. Very Dry! ANd I was wondering why I wasn't catching anything! Good Tip,Camo!!!!

Best time for me is when its raining and also on overcast days. They seem to hit all day in these conditions.
