Killing time on the ice.
« on: Feb 20, 2008, 04:46 AM »
As a preface, no activity should disturb the fishing of others. All of the examples that follow were done when the lake was empty and the fish wouldn't bite.
We have launched model rockets (the kids loved that), shot the potato gun, and my favorite, put a sail on a sled. My buddy was showing my son how to do it. He says all you have to do is hold the tarp up like this. The wind caught the tarp and he shot 60mph across the lake like Wily Coyote with a rocket on his back. He rode it out like a trooper. Haven't done that sort of thing in a couple years.
What have you done to kill time? Please keep it clean.

I have deer hunted out of my shack a few times. During shot gun season i take my gun with me when i am on our own ponds. Have not shot one yet while fishing but have had some close ones.I often read my fishing magazines but most of the  time i play with my Vexilar trying to learn more stuff about it.

Used to play similar to horseshoes when there was no snow on the ice.  Drill two holes 40-50 feet apart - don't go all the way thru.  Fill plastic bottles with water and try to slide them and make them go in the hole.

When the ice is glare, Curling with rocks from shore, though we never think ahead to bring brooms, so I guess its really sort of shuffleboard.
Perch darts in the snow, like lawn darts.
Sometimes we bring kites along for the kids.

If there's little or no snow on the ice, a 30ft or longer rope goes behind the quad and it's JetSled dragging time !

Glare ice is preferred for this sport, since putting 'em in the whip is a priority for the quad pilot and it keeps the JetSled from catching and rolling. The quad we use is good for 45mph, so you water-skiers can do the math when you've got your victim in the JetSled. Obviously a helmet is required for this one.

We keep a B-B Gun in the basket for the slow times.  Have spent many hours slaying beer cans and setting other peoples traps off when they aren't looking  ;D

Used to fish with some guys who brought a bowlingball and pins and shoveled off a lane on the ice.  I never really liked bowling but if anyone has ever played horseshoes on the ice I would love to hear about it.  Drinking beer and eating deer is how I kill time....oh yea and catching fish.

read, try out the new flyrod, go and find fish, take a nap.

we do high speed passes (generally 85-110mph) on the snowmachines in order to try to trip the flag on the beaver dams with the wind gust. our only rule is you have to do this to your own tip-up because somebody usually hits one. a tip-up getting smoked at 100mph is a sight to see. especially when your buddy hits his own trap.

I made a small bbq out of an old 5 lb coffee can. No weight other than a few handfuls of charcoal and 4 sheets of newspaper.  Not big enough for a porterhouse but tubesteaks and kabobs are done in a flash.
