Sunset lake
« on: Feb 15, 2019, 07:47 AM »
What's the deal with sunset?  Anyone ice fish it?  I have friends who have a camp up there so I imagine I could get easy access to it.

I'm sick of bomo Champlain and lake George.  I'd like to try something different.  Any insight on sunset would be much appreciated.
I'm not saying they're biting on Brant.  But they probably are

Have got some really nice rainbows there. Be careful for sight holes, I know a bunch of people use them there. Water quality is amazing. If you’d like a depth chart just message me on here and I’ll send it, it’s not listed on the vt state website, kinda tricky to find. I assume you’re talking about the sunset lake in benson vt.

Thanks for the replies guys

Sunset is on the navionics app so I'm good for depth charts.

The next question I guess is access.

I wanna bring the wheeler is there a spot to get on easily?.

I live like 15 miles from this lake and have never actually laid eyes on it

If you look on google maps there’s a road that goes the length of the lake, you can park on the side of the road there. That’s where everyone does. As for a 4 wheeler i think there’s some less steep points along that long stretch as well. Shouldn’t have any troubles.

I drove my sled on years ago in the northeast corner.  I can't comment on legality of it at this point, but its an easy access point for atv/sled.

Oh, also I believe you can only keep 2 trout in aggregate at sunset, no matter the subspecies. According to eregulations website.

I've fished out by the humps and caught a couple of big perch one time. I also set near the road "access" on the north shore and caught a small laker and jigged up some rainbows. There are some weed patches around those camps which hold panfish in the summer. The north west and south west coves have weed beds as well, seen panfish there during the summer.

I used to troll it from my canoe along the north shore and would find rainbows rising all along that shore over the drop off. Bigger fish were around 15". From what I've heard there are monster pike in there as well.

Just be careful parking along the road. I've heard that they may ticket if you are blocking the road too much.

Does anybody know how much ice is on the lake; it's got to be 10-12" now right?

Thank you.

Yeah about 10" I'd say.

We fished the north end today. To say it went horribly would be an understatement.

We caught some tiny gills. That was it

One flag- drop

I'll try it again.  What a pretty spot ....

Just making sure that this is Sunset Lake in Benson. Reading this old thread has me excited to head over there soon. Used to take my kids up there for Scouts activities but never fished it.

That's if we get a freeze. I always want to fish it, but around here ice comes late. FYI every three years I put brood rainbows in there before the winter. I put some in, Oct 2022.
